Establishing geometric relationships, solving equations, finding approximations, and, generally, discovering quantitative relationships are tools of indirect measurement: They are the core of mathematics, the drivers of its development, and the heart of its power to enhance our lives.

About the Author
Robert Knapp earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Princeton University in 1972. He has published work on differential geometry and partial differential equations, and, after a year at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, taught graduate and undergraduate mathematics at Purdue University. His study and appreciation of abstract mathematics began in high school and his conviction that mathematics, including abstract mathematics, is about the world began then, as well. Although he retired from the profession in the late 1970s, his study of the content, history and application of mathematics continues to this day. In recent years he has presented his unique perspectives on geometry and the number system in a series of lectures at Objectivist Summer Conferences organized by the Ayn Rand Institute. He has lived in the Philadelphia area for almost 30 years.

Brilliant Breakthrough in Mathematical Theory

Just as Ayn Rand corrected, completed, and extended the Aristotelian project into a new, brilliant, organic - and true - philosophic whole; so too retired professor of mathematics, Robert Knapp - applying Ayn Rand's theory of knowledge - has corrected, completed, and extended the Euclidian postulates into a new, brilliant, organic - and true - mathematic whole.

Dr. Knapp has synthesized his decades of research in modern academic mathematical theory together with Ayn Rand's theory of knowledge into a stunning work in which he has created the framework for a new philosophy of mathematics.

Chapter I, "Euclid's Method" lays the groundwork for a reinterpretation of Euclid's method that is solidly grounded in reality. After more than 2,000 years, Euclid's mathematical treatise has finally received the proper objective foundation necessary for modern mathematical theory to be set aright. This single chapter deepened my understanding of both the foundations of geometry and AR's theory of concepts.

While I do teach math to children, I found that having a mathematical background was not necessary to follow Dr. Knapp's arguments. Moreover, no prior knowledge of Ayn Rand's theory of knowledge was required either. Dr. Knapp's writing is crystal clear as he shuttles back and forth between abstract points and concrete examples. I found the book's illustrations extremely helpful in grasping the material.

My favorite chapter was "Geometry and Human Cognition" for its insightful application of AR's idea of "measurement omission" to mathematical diagrams and the resulting cognitive rewards. Surprisingly, I found my mind wandering to AR's theory of stylization and art while considering Dr. Knapp's views. There is much here for the serious thinker.

If you are interested in the philosophy of science in general, or the philosophy of mathematics specifically - this is the book that all future mathematical theorists will have to take into account. As for students of AR's philosophy, here we have an application of her view of knowledge to heretofore unexplored territory - a territory rich with untapped wealth.

Dr. Knapp's book can but only be the necessary beginning of a philosophy of mathematics for the 21st century - and a brilliant beginning it is.

a very readable, philosophical, objective defense of Euclid

As a homeschooling mom I was delighted to see this defense of Euclid's geometry. The author explains what angles, line segments, and circles are actually measuring, how Euclid relates one to another to bootstrap his way into measuring one thing by means of another, and how these abstractions symbolize real objects. It is both a philosophical defense of the useful, reality-based, practical worth of mathematics and an explanation of the math itself. I'm neither a math geek nor a philosopher, so a lot of it is over my head, but the author's explanations are very clear and thorough and non-technical (as far as is possible). The subject is becoming slowly more clear to me. So, I'm enjoying the book and highly recommend it even to other laymen.

The value of being worldly

I'm excited by this book. While I'm not through it entirely, it warrants a review already.

Prof. Knapp's integration, in the early sections of the book, of Euclid's great "Elements" and Ayn Rand's "Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology" is a pleasure to see and read. His discussion of the concepts of perfection and imperfection in shapes, and in relation to perception is eye-opening (in an intellection sense). And explaining the concept "precision", in the service of one's purpose for using geometry and measurement, adds great clarity to how one should think about mathematics and its relation to the world.

His whole project here, to extend Ayn Rand's epistemological approach to measurement and mathematics (as opposed to Aristotle's metaphysical approach, or Plato's approach, or the modern symbolist approach) into a new philosophy of mathematics is done with great clarity (I have to use that word again because clarity stands out compared to many other books on math theory that I've seen.)

Overall this book is a great tonic and antidote to the absurd Hilbert/Russellian flights of fancy in mathematics or the deeply embedded Platonic mathematical "universe" that so many mathematicians have mistakenly embedded in their way of thinking.

I fell for the highlander.

Eliza was able to transport me and the heroine back to Scotland in the 1700s. I'm obsessed with the series. Roderick was so romantic and impossibly suave. The sex was as hot as the build up. And the twist at the end??? I'm hooked. You will be too.

This book started out strong, but once Aileen traveled back in time, it started to wear me out trying to read through it. I understand the book is 1 of 3, it leaves on a precipitous cliffhanger, which is fine. I expect these things when reading series. But it feels like the author didn't put much effort into the last 30 pages or so of the book (and it's a 59 page book). Nothing was attention grabbing enough to interest me in purchasing the second book of the series.

About the Author

KEN SCHWABER is a cofounder of the worldwide Agile software movement and cocreator, with Jeff Sutherland, of the "Scrum" technique for building software in 30 days. He is president of Scrum.org, a software consulting firm, and led the process management product revolution of the early 1990s.

JEFF SUTHERLAND is the cocreator of Scrum, and was cosigner of the Agile Manifesto, which marked the start of the Agile movement. He has served as vice president of engineering or CTO at eleven software companies, managing the last seven entirely using Scrum, and achieved industry-leading, hyper-productive results. Jeff is the CEO of Scrum Inc., a consulting and training company.

Over-promises and underdelivers

This is a hard review for me to write. I have a great respect for both of the authors and what they accomplished in the world of software development. I loved Ken's Agile Project Management with Scrum (Microsoft Professional). However, I did not like this book very much. Even considering that I'm not the audience, I do work a fair amount with management in organizations and I wouldn't give them this book. The book felt it was written in a hurry, it had awkward parts in it which most in the Scrum community would probably disagree with and it over-promised, giving me the feeling that Scrum is the silver bullet that magically resolves all problems. That said, it did also have some really good parts, which I'll try to point out also in this review.

The book consists of 2 parts and a bunch of appendixes. The first part is the "why" which explains why traditional waterfall development is not suitable today and how an empirical process is better suited for the job.

The first chapter is a "we are in crisis" chapter. Unfortunately, the only data it quotes is the CHAOS report, which has been challenged a lot of time already. Next to that, it provides some anecdotal cases. It introduces the Stacey diagram, which is great, except that it is significantly changed and Stacey doesn't use it himself anymore.

The second chapter introduces the basics of empirical process and shows how it resolves problems in traditional waterfall development. It also summarizes major points on self-organization and the "new new product development game" article that influenced Scrum strongly. Also the third chapter explains the idea of just starting and getting and inspect-adapt loop going and that way evaluating whether Scrum produces any results. And chapter four explains the art of the possible and why transparency is essential and how Scrum assists with that. Chapter four was pretty good.

Then, part 2. Chapter 5 is a short introduction to Scrum. Interestingly enough, it mentions that the ScrumMaster is 'a manager' which felt a bit odd and simplistic. The rest of the Scrum introduction was extremely short, just mentioning terms but not explaining them deeply.

Chapter 6-8 give examples on how to adopt Scrum. From small project team (chapter 6) to the whole organization (chapter 8). Chapter 6 ought to explain how to start Scrum on a project level, but when looking at the chapter, the first half spends time explaining burn-down charts and the second half is trying to convince the world that 30-day sprints are "the right length". I found this somewhat odd as most of the world seems to recommend against 30-day sprints. It even calculates the overhead for shorter Sprints, but that is than contradicted by the Scrum Guide in appendix A which clearly states that the meetings are proportional to the Sprint length.

Chapter 7 talks about "studio level" adoption, which seems to be a part of an organization. It starts with the suggestion to let everyone sign a contract that they'll use Scrum, which felt odd to me. Then it showed a survey for determining how people are aligned with Scrum assumptions, which was pretty good. Then it shows a "dashboard" of metrics for management to use which to me felt a bit simplistic (I know Ken is doing more work on this at the moment, and hope it will improve). It then calls velocity a measure of productivity (which can be quite dangerous) and suggests it to be measured in function points. I'm personally not aware of many Scrum projects that actually use function points, so I felt the mentioning of that was a bit odd. The end of the chapter related to technical dept was quite good again!

Chapter 8 about adopting Scrum to the enterprise was 3 pages. Chapter 9 are the steps of a change project. This mostly is a summary of Kotter's change management ideas. Chapter 10 explains the concept of using Scrum to adopt Scrum, which is a summary of Ken's Enterprise Scrum book.

Appendix 1 is terminology. Appendix 2 is the excellent Scrum Guide, which you can also find online. Appendix 3 is a play-book for adopting Scrum developed by Rally, which didn't seem to have changes much since 2005.

All in all, the book had its good moments followed up by moments that made my head shake. The tone of the book was quite selling, which annoyed me a bit at times. The explanations of Scrum felt mostly shallow and then deep on surprising moments (3 pages on why the Sprint length should be 30 days, about as much as about adoption of Scrum to the enterprise). In general, the book didn't feel like one whole and felt like it was put together in a hurry. I had thought about giving it 3 stars, but think that would be too much as I wouldn't recommend reading this book. If you want a better introduction to Scrum by the same author, pick up the somewhat dated Agile Project Management with Scrum (Microsoft Professional) or just download the Scrum Guide (or alternatives).

I had expected more from two respected and influential people in our industry.

Finally, a book to enlighten managers

I've read a lot of books on Scrum. Most focus on the framework. Some focus on how to make it work efficiently. Some talk about how to make it scale in complex environments. A few will contain an obligatory chapter or two on introducing Scrum and its capabilities. I've yet to find a book that provides the complete, compelling story on why to adopt Scrum ... until now.

Ken and Jeff's latest book nails it. It starts off with a very real case study involving the FBI and their wasting of millions of dollars in failed software development efforts. The authors then present the why and the how the management team chose and adopted Scrum, getting the product to code complete.

After reading the book, any intellectually honest manager will see the value of empiricism and be crazy not to put Scrum to work on their next or current project.

Concise, targeted and perfect for senior management

If you're a manager then you probably don't have that much spare time on your hands so you'll be pleased to know that this is a short, concise read. While you don't need to understand the intricacies of software development, you do need to have experienced frustration with the results; that the cost of getting software developed doesn't stack up to the return you get from it , that the quality produced is inexplicably poor and sometimes the functionality misses the mark completely.

If you're in just such a situation then this book is perfect for you. Software in 30 Days explains the root causes of your problems and ways to address those problems. It also includes practical steps on how to transition your organisation's approach to software development so that you can end the pain and start getting genuine value from your software development efforts.

Index Annuities Read

I personally work in banking. However, index annuities are complex and even for me a little confusion. I needed an easy to read breakdown of how they work and also a source that showed both the positive and possibly negative side to them. What I really liked about the book starts on page 53 and it talks about "Behind the Curtain - The Insider View on Fixed Annuities". It's this type of additional info I really wanted to know that not many places will share with you.

It is an excellent source of information on annunities.

Annuities are a form of investment for retirement and can also be part of the systematic portfolio for the long term investor. Mr. Lucas skillfully explains the pros and cons of this type of investment in his book. He admits this is a very complicated, involved and intricate investment which warrants a professional well versed in the field to explain. On page 71 in his book he writes, "The devil is in the details you have learned in reading this book". The thirty years of experience Mr. Lucas has in the field is exhibited in his book. The fact that it is written in large letters is a plus for the reader to read and understand. He methodically explains the different types of annuities, the benefits and pitfalls of each and what to look out for in purchasing this product. It is an excellent source of information for any investor thinking of purchasing an annuity.

Great read for anybody interested in investing in Annuities!

I bought this book because I am in my late 40's and ready to concentrate on saving money for retirement. I had heard of Annuities, but never took the time to learn everything about them. This book really helped me to understand the details of annuities. This book is easy to follow and gives examples that clearly explain the material. What I especially enjoyed about the book was i didn't feel I was being sold something, but rather that the author was genuinely explaining the ins and outs of annuities. The author explained both the pros and cons of each available annuities. I feel like I have a much better understanding of my retirement options and I would highly recommend this book to anybody who is interested in their retirement or investing in general.

The selections range widely through Western history, from Pericles’s funeral oration to fallen Greek soldiers in the Peloponnesian War, to Tony Blair "exhorting his party to fight terrorism." History has yet to pass judgment on the greatness of the most recent speeches included here, but Safire shows a broad-minded, bipartisan inclusiveness in collecting the words of Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, history’s losers (Sen. Robert Taft opposing war crimes trials after WWII) as well as its victors. And several of the speeches he includes deal with politics only indirectly: such as Louis Pasteur’s paean to scientific education, the Dalai Lama’s sermon on the "Philosophy of Compassion" and Salman Rushdie’s description of a life "Trapped inside a Metaphor." This new edition of Safire's book, originally published in 1992, retains all the speeches in the first edition and adds 20 new ones, such as Pope Urban II launching the crusades, Bob Dole remembering Richard Nixon, and Colin Powell on racial hatred. Safire's criteria are subjective?a speech is included if he thinks "it's great"?and the tone of his unhelpful introduction is one of strained cuteness. Most collections of speeches focus narrowly on particular subjects such as American or classical speeches, with few attempting, like Safire's, to cover all times and places. In fact, The Guide to Reference Books lists only one: Brewer's ten-volume World's Best Orations, published in 1901. Not surprisingly, there is virtually no overlap between Brewer's 350 and Safire's 220 selections. Safire's book is not really necessary for libraries owning the first edition, but it is a good addition for those lacking Brewer's or in need of modern speeches. With an excellent index.?Peter A. brilliant compilation and analysis by safire

As a compilation it is probably up there with the classics; it certainly isn't limited by genre, time, space, or ideology. And it has most of the classics, just to make the rhetoric professor comfortable in using it as a sourcebook.

The real gems are safire's comments; they are the most pleasurable parts of the work. His writing is so clear, yet sufficiently nuanced that one can't pin him down as playing favorites even when one knows that he would find the speaker or the speech (or both) completely reprehensible.

See, in particular, his comments to Rabbi Stephen Wise's speech at a Lincoln Memorial ceremony. It is the type of material than one can truly savor and enjoy.

This is the speaker's cook book. Every great speech since the Sermon on the Mount seems to get a listing, each a beautiful little inspirational recipe for our own fumbling, stuttering, trembling efforts. To cap it all, Safire's editorial contribution is brilliant. He follows his hypnotic introduction with concise and balanaced analysis for each speech. If you are looking for something stirring for the Scout jamboree, something special for cousin Harriet's wedding, or that little extra for Pastor William's Sunday service this is the book for you. I couldn't put the book down. Highly recommended.

The best book on aerobatics, on a par with Stick and Rudder

Neil Williams was a British test pilot and aerobatic pilot with a rare gift of skill in both flying and writing. He was a World Champion of aerobatic competition. This book is the standard text on aerobatics, to be considered on a par with Langewiesche's Stick and Rudder and Robert Buck's Weather Flying. He writes with the authority and conciseness which can only come from absolute mastery of the subject, but also accomplishes conveying the finer points as well as the fundamentals of aerobatic flying to an inexperienced reader. It is also true that few accomplished aerobatic pilots can read this book without improving their knowledge in some way.
As well as the technical aspects of the technique of aerobatic flight, Williams also includes the human aspects, what it feels like, why pilots are drawn to it, giving an insight that non-pilots will enjoy.
The writing style is witty and interesting, with many anecdotes. It is not the kind of book that simply tells you push this and that will happen. If you understand this book, you will understand your airplane, regardless of its attitude.

Comprehensive book

A good book that goes into lots of detail about many Aerobatic maneuvers. I personally didn't find it that easy to read i.e. reading about a maneuver and then trying it out because there was so much complex detail in the text. Having said that it is the only book I have read so far about aerobatics so have not got anything to compare it to.

Wow...I am hooked

I have tried many programming books. I have even taken a programming class or two but it has never really clicked before. There have always been to many jumps from explanation to assumed understanding. I would get lost and things never clicked. Recently I decided to give programming another chance because I believed somewhere in the back of my mind that I should be able to figure this out. I have been a system administrator for years but have never delved into scripting or programming before because I thought maybe I was just never meant to be a programmer. I decided maybe it was just the way I learn. So I decided first to start out with a HeadFirst book. It lost me immediately. The way it was presented in that book definitely didn't click for me. I set back to the task of finding a book and came across this one. This is it. I love the way he goes through the code and then has you run it and then explains what every line of code is doing. This approach has finally made things start making sense. I am even able to figure out the Challenges at the end of the chapter and I am loving it! Thank you Michael Dawson!

On another note...I notice that people are having problems finding the files that go with the book. If you take the link recommended it the book and then go to downloads it is rather confusing, but if you go to the link recommended in the book and then do a search for python and then take the link for this book, another screen will come up that will give you an option to view available downloads. Harder than it needs to be admittedly, but that is how I found them.

Fine Choice for First Programming Book

I am a beginner with respect to programming, and do not have a particularly technical background: I know almost no math though I know formal logic pretty well. I was interested in learning something about computer programming just for fun and have looked through a number of books about a number of languages. I even spent some time with C before I decided on Python. To an absolute beginner, it seemed a relatively intuitive language without some of the messy detail required by C, for example, about memory allocation. I chose this book simply because it looked fun and very clear. Each chapter focuses on tools needed to create games. I do not have any interest at all in playing computer games of any kind, but it is a relatively painless way to learn Python. I also found the exercises at the end of each chapter very good. They are hard enough but not too hard. They generally required a fair amount of time and effort, but I was able to finally figure out all of them. This is important since I am doing this on my own.

The Cons: The book aims to be simple and brief, but sometimes it is too simple and brief. Yes I learned to get the computer to do this or that, but I did not fully get some of the concepts. In fact, I think the book moved on to fancy stuff like graphics before I got down all I needed of the basics such as file control. Perhaps someone who already knew something about programming would have had less trouble. For example, the material on writing to a file stored on the hard drive for future use was fine, as far as it went. But I realized, when trying to write a program of my own, that I did not understand a key point. If you have recorded some data to a file, and then want to revise that data, Python rewrites the entire file. Huh? What about my original data? It gets over written. There has to be a solution to this problem, but I did not find it in the book. After hours of work I devised a way to get the right result, but it was very messy and, when I posted a question on a Python forum, I found there was a simple way to do what I wanted. Maybe I am a bit thick, but I think this could have been directly covered in the book. There were several other topics that needed more discussion.

Still, keeping in mind that this book only goes so far, it is a very good introduction to Python. But if you are serious about learning Python, at some point, you are going to need one of those big fat and far more boring books.

Interesting thoughts, lack of structure

Python Programming by Michael Dawson is a very well written book intended to enthuse amateur programmers into the world of video game programming. By the time you finish chapter 12 of this book you will be ready to create your own mini games much similar to games you find on apps on phones and such. For those of you who want this immediate pleasure I have to say, this is the book for you and disregard my poor rating. But for those who really want to get down to the nitty-gritty basics of python and develop a solid understanding of it, this is not the book for you. So if you're a programmer who dreams of being a game developer one day, I say buy this book right away - it's fun. But if you're looking for a more formal approach to programming and aren't necessarily interested in the gaming aspect of Python Programming read on.

Let me tell you why I think this book deserves only 3 stars. A bit of background, I started researching with particle physicists and astronomers at my school and programming python was much required so I decided I wanted a solid understanding of creating basic python scripts. What I ended up getting was a unorganized book that seemed to toss in information only for the soul purpose of creating a game at the end of each chapter. This was very bearable for the first 3-5 chapters but after that I couldn't get through a single chapter without having to scroll through multiple pages to find what a certain thing does because of it's lack of structure. It also lacks direction, it teaches you enough to get through the chapter but doesn't let you spread your wings and become creative with the script, by this I mean that it teaches you the very basics and moves on without getting a bit creative with the code. Also, there doesn't seem to be summaries which I feel, at least in programming, are essential because after you learn something and got it down you just want to reference it quickly. All in all I felt very dissapointed because the idea behind the teaching method is fun, but it fails at being rigorous and theoretical which is what I wanted.

So like I said, disregard this review if you're looking to have fun with programming which is 100% fine, but if you want to get more professional about writing scripts that don't involve programming games, I suggest another book (wish I could recommend one). Remember though, a book is what you make of it.
