Required/desired reading

I read a lot of business/career books and they typically have 3 or 4 insights that I can take from them and use in my day job. I stopped folding pages back and highlighting passages in RISE because just about every page had a mark or a bent page...this book is that good.

Patty provides actionable insight on a more efficient and effective way to succeed in your career, raise your credibility and build a bulletproof network. RISE is required/desired reading for individual contributors and execs alike. Patty's insights are screamingly simple and extremely effective achieving a breakthrough in your career...to the point that I actually quote her book to friends and colleagues. All the sections contain valuable information, but if I were going to call out one item from each section that I've found the most valuable from a return on investment perspective based on Patty's book, I'd highlight these 3:
* Ruthless Priorities (Do Better): I can't tell you how many times I've been frustrated that team members "just don't get it!" Based on RISE I've changed the way I frame issues in terms of Ruthless Priorities that has had a measurable impact on the success rate of initiatives.
* Your Personal Brand (Look Better): Who do you think you are: The Innovator? Operational Expert? Closer? Who do OTHERS think you are is the more relevant question. Your brand is not something you just write down, it needs to be reinforced over time through deliberate behavior.
* Authentic Networking (Connect Better): Patty has a pretty pragmatic approach here and the best advice I've gotten from anyone regarding networking. Specific examples on how to leverage the people around you in a way that's value add for them in order to expand your network.

I can honestly tell you that the time you'll spend reading this book and putting it into action is the best investment you will have made in your career in a long time. Like the other review in this section, my only regret is that I didn't have access to this earlier in my career.

Simply the Best "Business" Book I Have Ever Read

I have started and stopped many, many a business book in my 20+ years in high tech. With the best of intentions, I started the material excited that I was on some path to enlightenment only to abandoned ship due to sheer and absolute boredom. I also seldom offer reviews (of any kind) but then Rise is not one of "those" business books.

I cannot recall, in a long time, a book so well organized, so thought provoking nor so damn relevant to today's business community as Rise. Ms. Azzarello speaks to the reader in plain, direct English with tremendous passion and purpose for the insight she provides. Insight and perspective forged from real experience. Experience that significantly "moved the needle" in leading, large-scale, high tech organizations where all too often real performance and how to achieve it is lost amid politics, power plays or just plain incompetence. Her style is genuine and casual. Like the ol' friend next door you've known for years. A friend, in this case, whom the reader comes to feel, really does want you to benefit from her advice and experience, both good and bad.

Whether you are an industry veteran or a recent college grad, you'll benefit from the value the book provides. Honestly, one of the best books, of any kind, I have read in quite some time.

Plain-Spoken Yet Smart Guidance to Accelerate Career Success

In "Rise," Patty Azzarello has done what no other successful executive before her has: analyzed, codified and recorded the steps and techniques required to achieve success in, and more importantly, to gain more fulfillment from one's career.

Patty provides a simple three-step program (1. Do Better; 2. Look Better; 3. Connect Better) one can follow in a prescribed and pragmatic, step-by-step manner. And she provides a measurable amount of the wisdom and specific guidance in a freakin' $19 book that one would pay many hundreds of dollars for in one of her in-person trainings. I would know this, because I've spent several hundred dollars to take one of Patty's training sessions. And I thought THAT was money well spent.

After reading this book, I'm buying multiple copies for my wife, friends and associates. Because it's a bargain. In fact, I don't think you'll find this type of counsel, written in plain-spoken language and designed to provide you a myriad of short cuts, anywhere else. I know that I haven't.

Brilliant

The history of philosophy is a gigantic canvas.

There are books that masterfully describe this history such as Bertrand Russell's 'History of Western Philosophy' and then there are books that make you fall hopelessly in love with the subject.

Marias' book is written by someone having such a love affair and its effect on the reader is infectious.

Following his mentor, Ortega y Gasset's, advice that 'clarity is courtesy', Marias (and his translators) use language to effortlessly and comprehensively explain the most difficult of concepts. This is the exception rather than the rule in the annals of philosophy.

You feel swept along by the personalities as much as their theories in this gem of a book.

I cannot praise this work highly enough. It is brilliant.

A Fine History of Western Philosophy

Julián Marías's "Historia de la Filosofía," translated by Stanley Appelbaum and Clarence C. Strowbridge, is an excellent introduction to the history of Western philosophical thought. First published in Madrid in 1941, it has gone through 22 editions in Spanish and has become the standard classroom text on the subject throughout the Spanish-speaking world. The book covers virtually all the major philosophers and schools from the Pre-Socratics to mid-twentieth century. Influential secondary figures are treated extensively as well. As a one-volume reference to the history of philosophy, Marias's text succeeds admirably. The book has four parts: Greek Philosophy, Christianity, Medieval Philosophy, and Modern Philosophy, this last part being the largest in extent and broadest in thematic scope. Christianity, the shortest part, deals basically with Patristic speculation and Augustine, and serves as a prelude to Scholasticism. The narrative is consistently well-structured, clear and precise. A thorough bibliography and index are included. At times the author avoids delving too deeply into some topic when this reader felt that a more profound treatment would have been preferable. Perhaps that is inevitable in a work of this breadth intended for a general audience. Fortunately, it does not occur too often and certainly does not diminish the worth of the book as a whole. "History of Philosophy" rightfully earns a five-star rating.

Great for Comps.

This is a fine overall history of philosophy. It is accurate and concise, and very helpful for anyone who has to take comprehensive exams for philosophy (this was the purpose of the book in the first place, compiled from his wife's class notes for a comp. review class he conducted). Besides covering the major trends and salient features of certain philosopher's positions, it also lists their major works and subsequent influence in the tradition.

The choice of this woman in this world, the journey she goes on, even the joining of her best, only friend, with her ordinary husband these are both always unexpected and yet the truth of them humanly inevitable. THis is a GREAT play, perhaps Lynn Nottage's greatest though it came after RUINED.

I was a fan of Melissa Broder's poetry (her book "Scarecrone" made me good-miserable for days) before I knew she was behind the So Sad Today twitter account. She has the sort of terrifying power of being able to take the intangible emotional stuff and put it into words without overworking it to the point that it becomes solely about her. Instead, it allows you to connect and feel with her. That's also been the best thing about the twitter account, and why everyone I know follows it.

So Sad Today (the book) evokes Melissa's previous work but does so with more humor and, you know, has more words. Having her fill in the gaps a little makes it easier to digest quickly so you can feel "all the feels" right away. So Sad Today's voice is friendly and very current, it's like, how you and your friends talk IRL, and that makes it feel real and personal. It's like your friend confessing a dark feeling they thought only they had and then you both realize you feel the same thing but didn't know you could talk about it.

Not to say that everything in this book is super relatable. In one essay, Melissa explains a very specific fetish and how it developed. It's not something I could relate to exactly, but the way she tells the story and expounds on it is so funny that it doesn't feel at all disturbed. Well, a little less disturbed, I guess.

While the essays are rooted in sadness and anxiety and feeling alone, the result is something that ends up connecting all (many?) of us in a positive and helpful way. It's not a "self-help" book, but it might help a little.

Poignant, humorous, honest.

I have been following the @Sosadtoday twitter account for about 3 years now. I bought this book as a fan of the account, with little knowledge of Broder's writing beyond a 140 character limit.

My completion of this book provided me a similar feeling that @Sosadtoday brought me upon my discovery of it. Melissa Broder's personal essays brought melancholy accompanied with levity. "So Sad Today" is a collection of essays that will make you feel SOMETHING, and what a wonderful thing for words stringed together to do. It addresses the not-so-easy-to-swallow parts of existence. I found myself sympathizing with her, laughing with her, or relating to her. The book is filled with dark, sad, and sometimes even uncomfortable, humor. However, each essay is delivered with candor. And that honest quality is so evident. It left me feeling as though I had connected and shared something with her.

Buy this book if you're baffled by life and life's experiences. Buy this book if you are someone who struggles with mental illness or are someone looking to learn more about mental illness. Buy this book if you are a human person with an appreciation for alternate tellings. Just, buy this book.

A New Awareness and Exploration of Anxiety and Depression....

These deeply absorbing personal essays in "So Sad Today" take the genre of confessional writing to a level originating in stark reality mixed with light hearted humor that arises from the confidence of a healthy self-esteem and awareness. With some essay titles like: "Honk if There's a Committee in Your Head Trying to Kill You", "I Took The Internet Addiction Quiz and I Won", "The Terror in My Heart Says Hi", "The Patron Saint of Nicotine Gum", "Hello 911, I Can't Stop Time", and "I Want to be a Whole Person: really thin"-- author, columnist, blogger Melissa Broder examined the subjects related to her anxiety and depression in rather amusing and unconventional ways.

With the help of Craigslist while living in San Francisco, Broder secured a job as a receptionist in the new age Moonrise Center. The millionaire founder Judy Moon workshops featured seeking true love in the Tao, Chakras, "Electric Yoni", massage/free love and exploration. Broder fancied herself as a modern day comparison to Jack Kerouac/Hunter S. Thompson, and was encouraged to participate in sessions so she could sell and schedule them to potential customers. This story was both troubling and fascinating at the same time.

Broder and her husband "Ron Jeremy" (no relation to the porn star and not his real name) practiced open marriage for a period of time, he didn't mind his wife writing about their marriage or about his health issues which involved an unnamed illness that occasionally kept him housebound. In discussing obsessional romantic love and the excitement and magic of unrealistic "fake" love where Broder admitted she could become infatuated with another person (real or imagined), not even messages left on her phone can save her from poor decision making and/or her choice to ignore reality.
All the "cool" mentally ill people she knew were taking Wellbutrin, after taking the "dinosaur" of antidepressant Effexor XR for over 11 years Broder and her psychiatrist decided to wean her off her medication and the detailed story that followed with all the symptoms were highly engaging and interesting. Broder thoroughly exposes her readers to an entirely different way of looking at mental illness with this amazing read. ~With thanks to the Seattle Public Library.

What made you write the book?

When I first started writing about 802.11, wireless networks were cool and promising. The first time I held a Wi-Fi LAN party, the equipment cost several thousand dollars, and we all needed to spend time installing the right software and drivers. Fast forward a decade, and 802.11n has come along. Wi-Fi has grown up. Every computing device you want to interact with just has Wi-Fi built in‚ and some devices, like the iPad, don't even give you the option not to use it. In the middle of the '00s, I would talk about Wi-Fi and say that everybody was going to have two Wi-Fi devices: A laptop and a phone. I was wrong. It's a laptop, tablet, smartphone, and maybe another device or two. Supporting all these devices requires a fast network, and right now, that means 802.11n.

Why is your book especially important now?

It's only a slight joke to say that there are only two kinds of users. There are those who have iPads, and there are those who want them. Building a robust network to support tablet computing and its rich interactive experience blending text, audio, and video is a challenge. This book teaches you how to do that.

What is the single most important thing readers will be able to do after reading your book?

Readers will understand the trade-offs involved in building a large-scale wireless network, and how 802.11n's protocol features help them build the network they want.

What do you think is on the horizon for your readers?

Wireless LANs touch everything in networking. A key enabler of the mobile computing revolution is that small devices can access data and applications stored elsewhere on the network. Providing a solid network connection is the first step towards enabling any network service, whether it is hosted applications, videoconferencing and screen sharing, or electronic learning.

About the Author

Matthew Gast is the director of product management at Aerohive Networks, responsible for the software that powers Aerohive's networking devices. He has been active within the Wi-Fi community, serving as the chair of both security task groups at the Wi-Fi Alliance, where he leads efforts to extend the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) certification to incorporate newly developed security technologies and drive adoption of the strongest forms of security by network administrators. He also led the Wi-Fi Alliance's Wireless Network Management marketing task group's investigation of certification requirements for new power-saving technologies. Matthew is also the past chair of the task group that produced the 802.11-2012 revision.

Good overview, PHY chapters lack technical depth

The 802.11n release marked a huge increase in throughput over previous versions, due almost entirely to PHY improvements such as LDPC codes and MIMO. The author goes into very little detail on these topics, which would be fine if he pointed interested readers to more in-depth references on technical background and how they are implemented in 802.11n. Instead, the only references in the PHY chapters are shameless plugs to the author's main 802.11 book (which admittedly is an excellent reference, but is not a reference for 802.11n advanced PHY features).

The MAC chapters are much better. The chapters are still very brief, but the author does an excellent job explaining the improvements due to advanced MAC features introduced with 802.11n.

The three star rating is an average: 4 stars for the MAC chapter and 2 for the PHY chapter.

Not really a survival guide; more like a technical manual

This book has nothing really useful for a sys admin at a school. It is incredibly technical and is geared for an engineer who wants to know every minute detail of how wireless-N works (the actual technology behind the scenes). I was expecting a "how to" book that would explain all the "gotchas" involved with deploying a wireless solution, but it is really just page after page of highly technical jargon.

Straightforward, clear, and detailed

This book gives the lie to all the turgid, poorly written technical documentation I've ever had to slog through. It's clear, straightforward, detailed, and interesting. I'm familiar with low level wired network protocols so what I appreciate most are the discussions of the design tradeoffs involved in going wireless. That was particularly helpful to me.
