About the Author
David Skwire, with degrees from the University of Wisconsin—Madison and Cornell University, taught composition, creative writing, and American literature at Cuyahoga Community College for twenty-five years. He also served on the faculties of Tufts University and Temple University. He acknowledges, however, that his job of most interest to students was a two-year stint as a writer of humorous greeting cards. In addition to his coauthorship of Student’s Book of College English , he is author of the successful Writing with a Thesis . Now retired, Skwire lives near Cleveland.

Harvey S. Wiener taught for many years as professor of English at LaGuardia Community College. He has served in a variety of administrative
positions, most recently as Vice President at Marymount Manhattan College. Dr. Wiener has directed the basic writing program at Pennsylvania State University and has taught at Teachers College, Columbia University, Brooklyn College, Queensborough Community College, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brooklyn College, Wiener holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature from Fordham University. He was founding president of the Council of Writing Program Administrators and was chair of the Teaching of Writing Division of the Modern Language Association. Wiener is the author of many books on reading and writing for college students and their teachers, including The Writing Room. His book for parents, Any Child Can Write, was a Book-of-the-Month Club alternate. His most challenging writing assignment was a test to quality as Chief Writer for a network soap opera by developing the content for six weeks of episodes. He does not regret having lost the job to someone else.

This book changed my life

I found this book while trying to build a interpreter for a distributed language. Appel's approach not only solved my immediate issues (a uniform means of procedure call in the presence of mobility) but opened my mind to the utility of continuations in many areas of CS. It was a real mind opener, and the explanations were clear enough that I could adopt this approach with little difficulty.

This book was fantastic. It opened my mind to a different mindset towards the compilation process while at the same time demystifying many concepts that I had previously only partially understood.

It is clear, concise, well-written, and unusually approachable for its genre. That said, I recommend some familiarity with ML-family languages as a prerequisite for approaching the book. He does include an appendix that's supposed to explain ML, but there are plenty of subtleties that I would have easily missed if that were my only resource.

This book doesn't discuss the front end of the compiler at all--there is no discussion of lexical analysis, parsing or type inference. If that's what you're after, look elsewhere. This is text is limited to the back end of the compiler.

The biggest quibble that I have with it is that the code generation chapter used MIPS/MAX/SPARC/68020 for case studies. In today's climate, ARM/x86/LLVM would be far more relevant and practical. This is an unfortunate consequence of the age of the text.

Great source for general understanding of continuations and closures

Read this book if you wish to understand continuations. It's the first source I've seen that emphasizes that continuations are not functions in the ordinary sense even though they look like functions, syntactically. If you only read papers and books that "sugar" continuations by calling them functions, you will never understand them because your intuitions about function calling will mislead you and you will find only paradoxes. You can only implement continuations if you have tail-call optimization (TCO). That's their little secret and that's why papers about them written by Schemers don't go out of their way to explain that they aren't ordinary functions. In Scheme, they ARE ordinary functions because Scheme requires TCO. But you will go mad trying to implement them or even trying to imagine how to implement them in most other programming languages. Continuations don't return and they don't push stack frames when you call them. They're more like a fixuppable goto with an environment containing assignments of value to variables. And that segue's to my second recommendation:

Best in show!

Hellbound is one of the most enthralling and energetic books that I've ever read. On a whim, I bought this book and ended up being completely unable to put it down.

The plot is delicious, the characters are so delightfully varied and robust, but they all pale in comparison to the imagery which this book illicit.

Be prepared to be swept away into the underworld... then finding out that you love it!

As a lover of philosophy and anthropology (with several years of Catholic school thrown in) I found this book to be an utterly liberating take on the traditional story of heaven, hell, god and satan.

If you haven't already, do yourself a favour and buy this book... or steal it and become Hellbound!

A New Awakening

Tim Hawken is going to become a very important writer (he already is to many). The description can tell you about the story, but from the first page I had a movie rolling through my head and couldn't put it down.
So many "aha" moments, laughing, and tears. Michael and "Lotte" is the most bittersweet story you'll ever read...The end had me counting down the days and watching Tim's twitter account for updates on the continuation!
I'd go as far as saying I even had a bit of an awakening...

It's one of those books///

I read this book a great while ago and forgot to leave a review. Shame on me! Recentlly the film Tucker and Dale vs. Evil played a genius little twist on the cliche settings of its genre.

Mr. Hawken is a master of misdirection and a natural story teller. If this book were made into a movie I can only hope someone with serious talent gets involved. I found the dialogue very pulpy and witty. I want to read it again so I can go back to hell one more time. Going there with Hawken isn't so bad.
