About the Author
Robert Merle (1908-2004) was born in French Algeria, before moving to mainland France in 1918. Originally an English teacher, Merle served as an interpreter with British Expeditionary Force during the Second World War, and was captured by the German army at Dunkirk, the experience of which served as the basis for his Goncourt-prize-winning Weekend at Zuydcoote. He published the 13 volumes of his hugely popular Fortunes of France series over four decades, from 1977 to 2003, the final volume appearing just a year before his death in 2004.

Left me breathless

In Heretic Dawn, the third book in the Fortunes of France series, Pierre Siorac shares his adventures traveling to Paris to obtain a pardon from the king for having slain his villainous neighbor in a duel. French court life is revealed with its scheming, shifting alliances, and ostentatious foppery. Although warned by his father that “caution, prudence and patience are the teats of adventure,” Pierre— through his big heart and lust for living—becomes ensnared in the Saint Bartholomew’s Day massacre where thousands of Huguenots were butchered by Catholics in the raging war of religion. The best paced and most interesting of this series thus far, this book left me breathless. I would advise the reader that Heretic Dawn is best enjoyed after having read the first two books in the series, The Brethren and City of Wisdom and Blood.

Wonderfully written short stories!!

These short stories are easy to read and very imaginative. Ed writes in a way that allows you to create pictures to go along with the stories in your head. From whimsical and fun to serious and thoughtful - you will want to keep reading until you've read each story. My favorites were Old Jake, The Hobo, and The Old Watering hole (hilarious!!). I highly recommend! Thanks Ed!

I really like the stories. If you know of ancestors from Ireland or Scotland these stories will bring those stories to life. Also the story of the Tamm boys was really good.

one of the best for clinicians

It's not easy for clinicians to find a good practical stat book. This one is not a textbook of biostat but what amazes me is that it always has an answer for a question I (always) have with regard to stat in medicine which I, at times, cannot find it in other books. I think clinicians especially physicians may have other good stat books but this one is a must as it is concise, easy to read and look for what you need.

After the devastating earthquake in Haiti, on January 12, 2010, Steven Holl had the idea of devoting the next Pamphlet Architecture book to solutions for rebuilding the architecture and infrastructure of the country. Going back to the origins of the series, which was founded by Holl in 1977, Pamphlet Architecture 31: New Haiti Villages presents Steven Holl Architects' vision for a new way of building in Haiti, with contributions from leading structural engineer Guy Nordenson and Matthias Schuler of climate engineering firm Transsolar.

To avoid making architecture that would just repeat the problems of the past, Holl asked the following questions to guide his design:
1. How should Haiti rebuild?
2. If the political corruption before the earthquake was problematic, what now?
3. Can urban/architectural expression be by Haitians?
4. Will outside engineers build pragmatic strongboxes?
5. Can the poetry of Haitis wind and sea, its colors and vegetation, its sky, guide planners and architects?

Holl attempts to answer these questions with his idea for "Dense-Pack Villages," a type of courtyard housing that could be built with recycled concrete from fallen buildings and steel and would be hurricane- and earthquake-resistant. Each "village" could house approximately 200 occupants, and the courtyards would be filled with greenery and fruit trees. Holl proposes that these houses use solar cells on their roofs to provide electricity, allowing the villages to potentially operate off the grid. Water can be supplied from desalinization plants in each village, and also from new reservoirs, replacing the outdated reservoirs that were destroyed in the earthquake.

The architectural ideas present in sketches, scaled drawings, and models are given more definite form with scientific analysis and advice from engineers Nordenson and Schuler. Nordenson, with his colleage Rebecca Nixon, advises on how to improve the durability and safety of new buildings in Haiti through improved construction and structural engineering techniques. Schuler gives numbers and dimensions to the plans to use solar power, water desalinization, and gray-water recycling in the Dense-Pack Villages.
