Its aim is to recognize the tombs' commonalities and differences across ethnic divides and to determine the rationale that lies behind these connections and dissonances. This book sets the tomb programs within their social, political, and religious context and analyzes the manner in which the multicultural population of Graeco-Roman Egypt chose to negotiate death and the afterlife.

About the Author
Marjorie Susan Venit is Professor Emerita of Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is the author of Monumental Tombs of Ancient Alexandria: The Theater of the Dead and Greek Painted Pottery from Naukratis in Egyptian Museums. Her previous book projects have been supported by generous grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Kress Foundation, and the J. Paul Getty Trust. Among her other national awards are a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship and fellowships from the American Research Center in Egypt, the American Association of University Women, and the American Philosophical Society.

About the Author

Steven A. Beebe is serving in his 28th year as Chair, of the Department of Communication Studies at
Texas State University. He is Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor of Communication Studies. He also served as Associate Dean of College of Fine Arts and Communication for 25 years. Steve is an author and co-author of twelve books (with multiple editions totaling more than 65 books), more than 50 articles and book chapters, as well as over 150 papers and presentations at professional conferences. Steve’s communication books have been used at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the world making him one of the top communication textbook authors in the United States. Steve is President of the National Communication Association (NCA), the largest professional communication association in the world.

 

Susan J. Beebe has been on the faculty of the Department of English at Texas State University-San Marcos since 1988.  As Director of Lower-Division Studies in English, she directs the first-year writing and sophomore literature programs and helps to train and mentor some 60 graduate teaching assistants annually. Sue’s professional interests and expertise encompass both oral and written communication.  She has co-authored with Steven Beebe several communication textbooks used at more than a thousand universities worldwide.  In addition, she has published articles, conference papers, and teaching materials in both English and communication studies.

This book is over rated and over priced for what you get.
Has some serious book to web site issues to work out.
The content of the book did not coincide with the Bebe web site.
Quizzes often didn't match up to the chapter in the book, was very frustrating.
Fix the glitches and this could be a great book and resource.

Along with many others of the depression era Franlin Hall grew up in rural poverty and was deeply religious. Initially he was with the Methodist church but their stance against healing forced him elsewhere. During the depression and World War II he travelled as an independent evangelist. In 1946, he published a brief book entitled "Atomic Power with God through Prayer and Fasting." The book, which provided detailed information on the methods and benefits of fasting, was an immediate success and brought Hall considerable fame. According to Hall, all of the major evangelists began following his fasting regime and miracles erupted everywhere. Many observers of the early revival years agreed, as one said, "Every one of these men down through the years followed Franklin Hall's method of fasting."

fasting is the way to release the power of Jesus.

We live in a day when it is absolutely necessary for every believer to function in supernatural power. Everyone of us! Fasting is the only way to come into that. This book is anointed. I started reading it and started a 10 day fast which I am on day 8 now. I feel clearer, more sensitive to the Lord and my faith uncapped! One knows they should fast but I just couldn't muster the willpower or gumption. But this book imparted to me an empowering grace to do this extended fast. I've had phenomenal grace. Get this book if you want to go deeper.

If you want breakthrough, want to draw closer to God, fasting is the key. This book has scripture, advice, and testimonies of what fasting can do for you, spiritually and naturally.

Easy to read

Easy to read. At first it seems like it might bore you, but I haven't been able to put it down. Very informative and helpful read, especially if your entering an extended fast and having trouble sticking to it. If that's the case get the prayer that moves mountains book to go along with it and you will see victory. I love this book. It's down to earth, old but exceptional, VERY informative, and is, at least in my fasting journey, a must have, must read book. Great purchase!

This book is the culmination of eight years' study, reflection, cooperation, and regular old fashioned work.
 
When I started working on the problem of enabling test-driven database development, I approached it as a technical problem - one to be solved by a tool.  For years, I tilted at windmills, trying to get people to just use the tool I wrote.  After some time, it became apparent that the problem wasn't tools - at least, not exclusively - it was a people problem.  It wasn't obvious to someone why they would use the tool I wrote or how they could use it.
 
I then embarked on a crusade to help people understand some techniques that serve as the foundation of test-driven database development; most notably, transition testing.  I gained some traction on that front when I wrote Transition Testing: Cornerstone of Database Agility.  However, as the title implies, that work really only locked down one part of the problem.  There was a lot more to the story and I needed to find a way to tell it.
 
Finally, in 2010, I began writing a book on how to do lean and agile database development with the support of my then and current employer, Accelrys, Inc.  Over time that was refined and evolved until it became this book: Test-Driven Database Development: Unlocking Agility.  This book represents a complete system that enables a TDD process which is very nearly as fluid and natural to the task of database development as traditional TDD is to the task of object-oriented development. 
It will take time to learn but I've found it well worth the investment.  Once people are doing the process, I believe that the right tools will start to spring up around the work we all do.

About the Author
Max Guernsey is currently a Managing Member at Hexagon Software LLC and a product architect at Accelrys, Inc. For much of Max's professional career, he has been a consultant, advising a variety of software companies in many different industries using multiple programming and database technologies. In most of these engagements, he spent months or even years helping teams implement cutting-edge techniques such as test-driven development, object-oriented design, acceptance-test-driven development, and agile planning.

Max has always been a "hands-on" consultant, working with teams for long periods of time to help them build both software and skills. This series of diverse, yet deep, engagements helped him gain a unique understanding of the database-related testing and design problems that impede most agile teams. Since 2005, he has been thinking, writing, blogging, lecturing, and creating developer-facing software dedicated to resolving these issues.

The Real Deal... THE book for TDDD

I was a little wary of this book when I first saw it. No real specific red flag came up, just the general thought of yet another TDD book that magically unlocks agility.

The author caught me by surprise as I started to read the book. He starts off with the way we need to change our view of databases from that of a particular instance into one of classes of databases. This line of thought is what enables TDD in the database world.

The third chapter he covers the differences and relationship between test-first programming and test-driven development. He gets you thinking in the right frame of mind about TDD.

The book continues with details of the practices and patterns you need to know to succeed at TDD with databases. I have listed the chapters below.

Through the process of showing us how to change our view of databases, the author introduces a way of building and deploying databases using XML scripts. He use XML to define the changes to the database, and a library he wrote to handle the parsing the XML and update the database. That technique is used throughout the book.

I mention that because it may be easy to miss when the author says "I'll leave the implementation details to you, but I typically express the database design in terms of XML documents and store the already-applied versions in a table." I want to point that out because as you start going through the code it may get a bit overwhelming when you see how much work the author puts into the supporting library and XML documents. His tools include using NUnit also. There is an NUnit plug-in for Visual Studio 2012 available which makes running the tests and debugging while testing a lot easier.

The thing to keep in mind is that the author is introducing TDDD (Test Driven Database Design) practices and patterns and he is using the implementation method he has used for years. I accomplish the same thing as the author but I use Visual Studio's Unit Test Project template for tests, the SQL Server Database Project template for database scripts, and TFS for versioning, branching, and merging the tests and database scripts. The point is, keep reading because the author includes great advice throughout the entire book.

The code samples are very well organized and usable. After changing the connection strings and using NuGet to download Moq and NUnit, everything ran as expected. The author uses C# to write the tests and parse the XML he uses to define the database structure and changes.

The author's writing style makes the book an entertaining and enjoyable read.

Overall I highly recommend this book to developers, database administrators, enterprise architects, and software architects.

The best book I have read on databases

_Test-Driven_Database_Development_ is the best book I have read on databases. I'm a professional database developer, with almost twenty years experience and certifications from multiple vendors.

This books describes the problems that plague business systems everywhere, and then clearly explains why they exist and simple processes to overcome them. Read this book and surpass your peers.

I agree with the negative review that at times the examples are challenging, and even that some of the terms are poorly chosen. But this book is truly brilliant and sorely needed. Invest the effort to learn its valuable lessons.

Ivan: The Picture Book!

My oldest daughter is 7.5, and she read the Ivan novel over the summer. She thoroughly enjoyed it, and so when I saw that an Ivan picture book would be coming out, I preordered it. I did not tell my daughter, so she was pleasantly surprised by the book's arrival a couple of days ago.

This picture book is not narrated by Ivan, which is a shame, because Ivan had such a unique voice and a wry sense of humor. Rather, this is a biography about Ivan the gorilla, from his infancy in Africa amongst the other gorillas, his capture by poachers and subsequent arrival in America, his childhood as a "human", his internment at the shopping mall, and finally, his new life at the zoo in Atlanta.

The prose is light and airy, but it also has emotional depth. It conveys information about Ivan's life in an engaging and evocative manner. One part that struck me was that Ivan had been "ordered and paid for, like a couple of pizzas, like a pair of shoes."

The illustrations by G. Brian Karas are phenomenal. I have enjoyed his work in other books, and I love the way he has brought Ivan's world to life.

My daughter had some objections to details in the picture book that differed from those found in the novel. I explained the concept of "artistic license" to her, and she seemed satisfied with that.

I think this picture book is a fine companion to the Ivan novel. It makes Ivan's story accessible to children on a lower reading level than the level of novel.

I would absolutely recommend this book to others.

painfully sad yet powerfully uplifting: Curious George for a new generation

In this age of enlightenment, it seems unconscionable that a wild animal could be taken from its mother and shipped across the world to live alone for decades in a concrete cell. Can you imagine bringing your child to the shopping mall to gawk at the (not really so much anymore) wild animal from Africa? Look at the ferocious beast, Jimmy! Now let's swing by the food court before we get your new sneakers at Footlocker. That was our country, not very long ago.

Author Applegate previously won the Newbery Medal for her novel about the very same gorilla. Illustrator Karas has won plenty of awards, and is probably best known for Atlantic. His artwork here is reminiscent of the dusky earth palette Matthew Forsythe employed in Warning: Do Not Open This Book. Together, Applegate and Karas have created a picture book which exudes the same enchanting educative qualities as many Melissa Sweet titles and which belongs on every bookshelf. This is Curious George for a new generation.

Ivan is a heartbreaking story told with brutal honesty:

Poachers with loud guns
and cruel hands
stole the little gorilla
and another baby.

A man who owned a shopping mall
had ordered and paid for them,
like a couple of pizzas,
like a pair of shoes.

Applegate's prose is poetic and thus digestible for young readers and listeners, useful for a story which will be emotionally charged for children, not to mention most adults. Animal rights are at the forefront of some serious topics here. This is a book which makes me embarrassed to be of the same race as the poachers who for centuries and even now steal and kill what is not theirs. The finger of shame and blame is also directed at mall owner Ron Irwin, who for years refused to allow Ivan to be relocated. Thankfully, this is also a book which makes me hopeful for the future: a world in which children grow up seeing animals treated with dignity. We all share the same ever-shrinking Earth. Better to live harmoniously with our cohabitants lest a reversal of fortunes transpires, à la Planet of the Apes. I do not say conclusively that zoos have reached the apex of, pardon the pun, evolution. However, and to the extent that studying animals may benefit them (and us) in the long term, providing environments which approximate natural habitats surely must be better.

The real Ivan recently passed away at age 50, and I hope his last few years were happy. Not very many children's books make me feel the way I did with this one, and for that I am grateful. But I am also grateful for the chance to share this story with my own children.

Final point: The Author's Note credits the 1993 New York Times article, "A Gorilla Sulks in a Mall as His Future Is Debated," for inspiring the author's interest in Ivan. Not mentioned is the National Geographic documentary, "The Urban Gorilla," which aired two years earlier.

I realize this is a children's book and I bought ...

I realize this is a children's book and I bought it for 2 reasons 1 my grandson who is 3 and to own a bit of history see I remeber Ivan as a small child in 1971. We would go to B&I every Saturday, this is when they first brought him there and he was up high n a cage we climbed stairs to get to him back then it was just glass between us he was sometimes scary very angry(of course don't blame him) there were years later protests and picketers. Guess I just expected more history maybe Katherine should look up some of us old Tacoma ppl and ask us what we remeber so as more facts could be put in those books think I'll skip the others. On another note the "shopping mall" she spoke of is wrong back when Ivan was put In B&I it was a small store that consisted of discount clothes and a pet store (that was also picketed because of the bad care of the animals there) now it is no more than a small arcade and a carousel the reason we went there often as kids and a few shops. As far as "food court" some Hispanic food is served there but that didn't come in til the 90's. when Ivan was there on display there were other animals also, more oddities like 2 headed snakes. In late 70's and until finally Ivan received his freedom, it was because of hard work of animal lovers picketing and fighting for all the animals at B&I. When Michael Jackson was going to buy Ivan for his personal zoo it was those same people that stopped that sale and made sure he was put in a proper safe place to be shared by all people until he passed away when I believe he was finally somewhat free and happy with other apes. I wish hard work of a community was told in her book and that it was NEVER accepted by the Puget Sound community but because of a different time there were not many laws to protect exotic animals nor domestic for that matter. I'm glad Katherine wrote a book about Ivan but look at other reviews and it makes it seem no one cared when all along people fought for him and his freedom. Sadly Scamps the pet store is still there but under better management and B&I closes and changes hands frequently scamps is same building different owner. I hope this helps for before and after you read her book. Ivan has always been in our hearts here in Tacoma then and always for those of us who grew up with him.

Church History the way it should be told

William J. Bennett’s latest book, Tried by Fire, is a guided tour of the events and people of the first thousand years of the Church’s life, and it tells history that needs to be told in a way history should be told. This fast-paced survey is certainly a must read for everyone who already has a commitment to Christianity, because the book shows how the Church developed and spread in the millennium after the Apostles died. But Tried by Fire is also for those who are not predisposed to this particular faith commitment, yet who genuinely want to have a better understanding of the people and events that are foundational to much that puts the “West” in Western Civilization. From the heroic perseverance of the Church’s earliest martyrs in the face of brutal persecution, through the wranglings to refine and preserve the sound doctrine inherited from Christ’s Apostles, to the schism that shattered the unity of the Christian Church in the Early Middle Ages, Tried by Fire fills in much of the important background of Western Civilization that wasn’t covered in our high school and college history survey classes.

Tried by Fire also is a good read because Dr. Bennett writes history as history should be written: not as a dry historical chronicle, but with a human-interest approach that gives both color and texture to the story line. He introduces his readers of all faith commitments (or none at all) to a myriad of unfamiliar but must-know people, from Arius to Zosimus. In the pages of Tried by Fire, you’ll meet people you’ll love and others you’ll love to hate…along with some noble examples of people worthy of emulation today. For instance, the account of the struggles of the stalwart defender of orthodoxy, Athanasius, serves as an inspirational model of dogged perseverance in the face of unrelenting personal and political opposition. A Book of Wisdom!

We read some authors to gain knowledge; however, there are others we seek to read because we know we will gain wisdom. William Bennett fits the latter class. No average writer. No average mind. No average experience. Maybe known for his roles as our nation’s former Secretary of Education and Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Maybe known especially for his The Book of Virtues: A Treasury of Great Moral Stories, drawing on the wisdom of centuries passed down in “the classics” and by the sages of philosophy. It surprised me, but then didn’t surprise me to see him write this book. It was meant for someone like Bennett to write. It was meant for someone who would tell history with the integrity it deserves.

He tells it by referring to the giants: those who stand out in the world because of their lives, their teachings, and their willingness to suffer for both! If you were to go to Notre Dame looking for your Masters in Theology, or some other in Christianity, the works of these people would be required reading, simply because they are historical and history of Christianity cannot be told without them. These people meant what they said and died for what they said, beginning with the Early Church, those who followed them—who were taught by the Apostles—who took their places. Then, century by century, the men and women appear, who stood up against fierce persecution and “brutal opposition.” Here Bennett shows us that Christianity has never been for the feint of heart. It also has never been wholly accepted. It has never lived without some form of persecution. Make no mistake! This was the Catholic Church. The great Schism had not yet taken place. The advent of Protestantism was still centuries away. What we are seeing now in the world is simply history repeating itself in some way, to some degree.

Bennett’s new work will stand with a few other great books I have read lately: When the Church Was Young: Voices of the Early Fathers, Angels and Saints: A Biblical Guide to Friendship with God's Holy Ones, How The Catholic Church Built Western Civilization, and The Case for Jesus: The Biblical and Historical Evidence for Christ. Each contains a wealth of knowledge and insight to help us know on which side our bread should be buttered.

I am not a scholar, but have two master degree's in Bible and theology, church history, etc. This is not a scholastic approach, but more of a layman's presentation. However, I really enjoyed it. Bill presented the facts and the early church controversies in a very clear, honest, and easy to understand way. I highly recommend this book.
