Excellent book!

This is an excellent book that is ideal for someone new to automotive electrical/electronic systems and even someone like myself who has worked on cars for decades but can use a good review of these systems. The pictures and illustrations are so clear and colorful that they are almost stunning when you open the book. In fact, they are the best photographs and illustrations that I have ever seen in a book of this type. They are large and beautifully clear and the pages are of very high-quality glossy and thick paper.

I was a bit surprised by the amount of information about old electrical systems with distributors, points, generators, regulators, etc. But that's OK and someone working on a older car may find it to be a plus. However, many people may have little or no interest in the older systems and a unusally large percentage of the book is devoted to long obsolete systems. I would suspect that most people would prefer that the book emphasized modern electronics more. Don't get me wrong: The book does cover modern systems but I would say at least about 1/2 of it is about old systems. Also, know that this does not cover OBD systems at all but I'm actually glad that it doesn't because that's a subject in itself. (I bought the two most popular books listed on Amazon about OBD systems on Amazon and I found the Haynes book to be, by far, the better of the two. I have written a review of both of them. The Haynes book would be a perfect companion to this book.)

One funny thing that I noticed is that, in numerous pictures in the book, the author is shown using a DMM set to read AC voltage when he is reading a DC circuit. In fact, I don't know how he even got a reading on his meter as shown in the pictures. It's a small thing but it's funny that the author didn't catch that.

This book will be an excellent resource for me and I think others will find it valuable too. It's well worth the money.

it does a great job even on new cars

it does a great job even on new cars. One thing that I recommend to anyone buying an automotive scanner, buy and READ the books written on these things. Then get on the internet and read some more if you really want to fix your car. Most of these readers are very generic and will point to a probable problem. Read more and compare symptoms of related problems. Example, I had a P174 code on my Ford, basically too much air leakage in the plenum. Besides some serious work of removing the plenum, replacing seals and cleaning the EGR ports in the intake manifold, I discovered a badly rusted EGR tube at the exhaust pipe. One code doesn't tell the whole story. If you're looking for ABS capability, you'll find very few that will work with newer cars. Look them up and write to the scanner mfg. before you buy it.

very interesting

This book is a good one for the backyard mechanic who wants to learn a little bit about electricity and electronics in his/her car. It explains how to read a wiring diagram. It has several sections on cars' different electrical systems (charging system, starting system, sensors, etc) with explanations on how they work and how to troubleshoot them, which could really help you save some money down the road. Now you can do some troubleshooting on your car instead of `shotgunning' parts at it.
This book is easy to read, clearly explained, and nicely formatted, with a lot of figures/diagrams/pictures in color.
Although I was a little skeptical when I first bought it, I now find it more and more useful as I keep learning about cars.

ALL of Reshevsky's games.

I have had this book for probably more than a year now. I have spent many hours perusing it ... and many, many more going over the games.
First a word on the quality of this book: It really is superb. A beautiful hard-back, soft pages that are opaque, and a binding that has stood up to being bent in half ... more times than I care to admit.
This book has virtually EVERY SINGLE GAME that the great Reshevsky ever played. Now Reshevsky is a true giant in American chess. He was one of the top players in this country from probably the late 1920's almost to the end of the 20th Century. He won the U.S. Championship many times ... and more tournaments than I care to count.
This book is as lovingly and painstakingly done as any I have ever seen. (Period!!! Unbelievable accuracy ... I have found no errors in this book - despite about 50 spot checks of various games.) You get the complete score of each game, as well as a lot of useful information that other books and databases leave out. (Like exact dates - not just the year. Plus round number, things of that sort.) You almost always get a cross-table for each event as well. (Its great fun to see who played in what event. Many of the people are the legends of chess; far too many are no longer with us.)
You also get quite a bit of biographical data. There is a lot of info here, enough for any chess hound or Reshevsky fan. There are nearly 2000 chess games, (1768); and much more useful features. You can find anything very easily the author has provided indexes by opponents, openings, and ECO code. Over 400 pages of interesting material.
What are the drawbacks to this book? Its pretty expensive, you could buy a dozen used books for what this one tome costs. It is also dense, I would have liked to see much more biographical data and info and stories on some of the individual tournaments. The large majority of the games are NOT annotated. Many of the notes are those that were lifted from various periodicals of the time when the games were played. (I would have liked to see the author at least take a stab at annotating a few games!)
OK ... so what's the bottom line here? Its a simple question: "If I have the money to spend, should I buy this book?" I think the answer is a resounding YES!! Why? I will give you a few reasons: # 1.) If you are a Reshevsky fan like me ... I saw him play in many U.S. Championships ... then you definitely want this book. # 2.) If you are a fan of the game and chess in general, then this is a great book. # 3.) Much of the material in here ... and the games themselves ... would have been surely lost to the sands of time without this book. # 4.) This is NOT a beginner's book ... but any beginner could surely benefit from a diligent study of this great Master's games. He was good in the opening, great in the middle-game, and simply fantastic in most endings!!! # 5.) Looking for a ... RESOURCE BOOK??? Put this on your shelf. There is more reference material here than you could ever use, and more chess games than most small {personal chess} libraries offer!! # 6.) Any serious student of chess history would kill to own this book. # 7.) Any student who wanted to see and be able to study LOTS of different openings, and ... the way they really work in master practice, could use this book. I could go on, but by now, I trust you will get the point.
A large and hefty book that should last a chess lifetime. But I am an odd bird and love books, and never give one away or sell one ... ESPECIALY chess books!

The book considers the entire game collection of SR from child prodigy to the 1990's. The book divides all of his games sequentially into the decades he played. The introduction to each decade is interesting in itself. A review of the book's contents suggests that his performance against the worlds top players was somewhat spotty. The interesting contribution of the book is his clear, logical playing style. Nothing fancy, just grit and determination. A very interesting contribution to the world' chess literature.

Very good book for CK prep, still not perfect

Better than the 8th edition (which I also own). More algorithms, easier to read, more mnemonics and hints in the margins. Would recommend purchasing even if you own the 8th edition, which came out in 2012. Three years is a long time in terms of the Step and I don't want to risk missing out on any new facts. I still don't like the overall formatting, which is not in the exact style of the classic First Aid For Step 1 book.

However, still lacking in spelling out what the "next best step" would be in most cases. Would still need to buy MTB 2 to complement this book.

Probably the best Step 2 CK review book, but only 3.5 stars in my opinion

If you have been on any forum or talked to other med students regarding Step 2 CK the inevitable line is: MTB2/3 for review and Uworld for questions.

But there are better resources out there.

Lets get one thing out of the way first: Step 2 CK success comes from the resources and studying you did in your clinical rotations, how well you did in Step 1, and from Uworld questions and their explanations. The review book is much less relevant here than in Step 1. Importantly, however, a review book organizes your thinking and provides a single location for all the high yield facts.

First Aid for Step 2 is a good source. Not a great source. But compared to the classical Mastering the Boards combo it is leagues better. It actually covers topics in reasonable detail, especially IM topics, that MTB seems to shallowly skim over. While it is not as easy of a read, it is also not utterly worthless. MTB is made for people who just don't remember the disease. FA is made for people who dont remember specifics in pathophys and basic treatments of disease. In short FA is more detailed which makes it harder to finish but more useful if you actually plan on using a review book.

It is not perfect at all however. The pediatric section, while just as good as other review books, is horribly inadequate such that I annotated (from Uworld) to the point of wiping out all the margins in several pages in that book. The cardiology section does not have treatments for various arrhythmias nor talks about clinical decision making in such primary care topics as hyperlipidemia (the section is in the book, but the indicates for moderate vs high dose statins is not). The Gyn/OB chapters are passable but things like vaccinations to be given in pregnancy are not discussed, while other topics like screening for cervical cancer are presented as a wall of text rather than a flow chart.

Other topics are covered with more or less decent consistency. But oddly some topics will mention a disease but never mention the treatment or next best step which is unbelievably frustrating for a test which asks 90% of the time what the next best step (not the pathophys) is. Again this problem is glaring in the peds section.

The psych section was no better than the Step 1 version and even didn't include the ego defenses. It did have a bereavement vs depression table which is a high yield point for sure.

No surgery chapter. Sure some of the topics is under the header of "assorted topics in EM" but that is just silly considering it is a fundamental rotation.

In conclusion the book is good. Not great. If some sections were beefed up and the topics were covered more concisely and ALWAYS including treatment, then we are golden. If you plan on using a review book for Step 2 use this one. If you still prefer MTB 2/3 because it is an easier read then you are better off just doing questions.

I own the 8th edition which had a lot of terrible/useless figures and was outdated/not up to date so I was skeptical about buying this new edition. But I did and am not dissapointed! They borrow a lot of tables and images from FA for Step 1 so it's very use this book just like I did for step 1 ie annotating as I go through UWorld. It's more clinical and focuses on common diseases than rare ones (unlike Step 1). The only thing to be aware of is that there are no figures for algorithms for management or evaluation of disease. It's all in pros or bullet format which is fine with me.

I had to have this small little ole text for an English 290 class. This is a must have for your library. Especially if your barney like me. I love writing and I teach little ole Kindergarteners how to write. This book could help me further if I should have to teach older kids and maybe my sisters too!
