A Pretty Girl Gone Wrong

This is absolutely one of the wildest biographies I have ever read. If it wasn't true it would make great fiction, right up there with the sexy potboilers and confessionals I so love to read. This is the story of Vicki Morgan, longtime mistress to Alfred Bloomingdale, and the loved they shared, a strange and crazy kind of love that would lead to their mutual destruction. Here he was, scion of Bloomingdales Department Store, industrial magnate and member of Ronald Reagan's kitchen cabinet; and here she was a naive but gorgeous small town girl come to the big city.
This book has an epic sweep as Vicki Morgan, in a vain attempt to escape the married Bloomingdale, encounters a series of adventures with some of the world's most wealthy and powerful men. And women. It is not a tale for the faint hearted, but there are strong moral lessons--mainly there is a steep price for the glamour and the money men give for sexual favors.
The story is told from the author's point of view. He spent nine months with Vicki Morgan and was one of the last people to see her alive. The author, Gordon Basichis, gives us intimate insight into the making of a wordly rich girl who knows how to manipulate men for money, only to be trapped in the game she has profited by for so many years. Through the seventies and into the eighties she was getting at least a quarter millon dollars from these different lovers.
It's rare that I find a book so compelling. I love how the story describes the high life of power and money while showing, also, how this glitzy path leads to destruction and, in this case, murder. This was truly one of a kind.

Money and Power Prevail

Alred Bloomingdale was a rich, powerful man. He was part of Ronald Reagan's "kitchen cabinet." Vicki Morgan was a poor, confused teenager and unwed mother. At 17, impressed with Bloomingdale's money and power, Vicki became Alfred's mistress. Their relationship lasted 13 years and was more than sex. It was Alfred's wish that Vicki be "taken care of" and he signed papers guaranteeing her a sum of money for a specified period of time. After his death, his wife Betsy, cut off the payments. This set in motion events which would lead to Vicki's brutal murder.
This book tells of their relationship from Vicki's point of view. It details the sado-masochistic parties, orgies and prostitutes that Alfred's money bought.
I enjoyed this book. I always believed that money enabled people to get away with many things that us normal, middle class people would be prosecuted for; this book confirms that. Whether you believe that Vicki was a tramp who took advantage of Alfred, or a confused girl who was taken advantage of by a rich, old man with bizarre sexual proclivities, Vicki certainly did not deserve to be beaten to death with a baseball bat.

TRUE STORY

this book was very moving. the story of a mistress, who never can seem to find her way, but found love in a married man. the author got to knew vicki before her murder and this gives us great insight into her thoughts and feelings. i highly recommend this book, a great read from beginning to end.

Wonderful introduction to contemporary printmaking

I will be teaching printmaking in my school this year and found this to be a terrific resource. It contains philosophical, historical, and technical information that will be useful to share with my students. The photographs and examples include many contemporary artists and approaches to printmaking. I especially appreciate the troubleshooting section and the information on safety and non-toxic printmaking. The chapter on digital printmaking acknowledges the usefulness of those techniques in printmaking today and presents important concepts for incorporating digital resources. Some books I have read are overwhelmingly technical or have poor illustrations and photos. I found this book to be just the right amount of clearly presented technical information to get my class going and with exciting examples to inspire my students. As a teacher with limited printmaking experience - enough to get in trouble - this will be a book I reference all year.

Great Buy and easy to comprehend!

This book is great! It was recommended by my undergraduate printmaking professor and I have been wanting it ever since. Now that I am a grad student learning more about the printmaking medium, this book has been very valuable. It has helped me to better understand the different techniques in all aspects of printmaking. It includes great images and step by step instructions. I recommend this book for everybody involved in printing--regardless of their level of expertise!

The Colors Duke, the Colors!

My previous printmaking book was almost entirely in black and white, and only had references to the old masters. Grant it, there is nothing wrong with the old masters, but this book is far more useful in safe alternatives to the cancer causing old techniques, and what's happening now in the print world.

Only 10% of the figures are actual X-rays. 90% are just plain figures and schemes.

Great e-book, would prefer the hard copy.

I really like this book. As an e- edition it is easy to "search" for things that you are looking for. It would be immensely better if the page numbers were still present in the kindle version to help with orientation when instructors recommend reading certain pages. That would be my only negative to this version of the book.

It's dense. It's hard to get through. But honestly, I don't know if that's the fault of the publisher or book so much as the field. Outside resources are helpful, and this has lots of information that's helpful and topical (just have a cup of coffee in hand when reading it).

Should be considered required reading for all lawyers

Had Locked Down: Information Security for Lawyers not been published by the American Bar Association (ABA) and 2 of its 3 authors not been attorneys; one would have thought the book is a reproach against attorneys for their obliviousness towards information security and privacy. In numerous places, the book notes that lawyers are often clueless when it comes to digital security.

With that, the book is a long-overdue and valuable information security reference for anyone, not just lawyers.

Such a title is needed as the legal field has embraced digital technology for nearly every aspect of the legal field, has magazines and conferences about legal technology and much more. Wireless (often insecure) networks are pervasive in corporate offices throughout legal America.

The underlying problem is that while attorneys often know the intricacies of tort law, court proceedings and the like; they are utterly unaware of the information security and privacy risks surrounding the very technologies they are using. In many firms, the lawyers think that someone is protecting their data, but don't understand their requirements around those areas of data protection.

Legal IT systems are a treasure trove of personal data. Many small law firms are extremely attractive to identity thieves gives their systems have significant amount of personal information via social security numbers, credit card information, birth dates, financial information and much more. Small law firms are notorious for weak information security controls and attackers will scan those systems and networks for vulnerabilities.

A pervasive aspect of the book is ABA rule 1.6 regarding the confidentiality of information regarding client-lawyer relationships. The rule requires that a lawyer not reveal information relating to the representation of a client unless the client gives informed consent. The lawyer though can reveal information relating to the representation of a client to the extent the lawyer reasonably believes necessary. The myriad details of 1.6 can be left to the bar association to enforce, suffice to say that a lawyer can find themselves on the wrong side of the law if they are not careful with information security controls.

The authors note that although lawyers are all well aware of rule 1.6, the challenge is how to keep client data secure in the digital age. In a world of paper, things were much easier and cheaper This is why the authors note that so many otherwise competent layers fails so miserably in reference to their duty to maintain the confidentiality of digital client data.

The book quotes an ABA 2011 technology survey in which 21% of large law firms reported that their firm had experiences some sort of security breach, and 15% of all firms reported that they suffered a security breach. It is figures like those which show that attorneys really need to read this book and take the information to heart.

The books 17 chapters are in a readable 150 pages, with an additional 120 pages of appendices. Written in an easily understandable style and non-technical for the technologically challenge lawyer.

When it comes to the security of client data, in chapter 4 the authors write that encryption is a topic that most attorneys don't want to touch with a ten-foot pole. But it has reached a point where attorneys must understand how and when encryption should be used. Just as important, they need to know about key managements, and what good encryption is. The chapter provides a high-level detail on what needs to be done regarding encryption.

Chapter 13 is on secure disposal, is an important topic to everyone, and not just lawyers. Digital media needs to be effectively disposed of; and for many lawyers, they often think that means reformatting a hard drive or simply erasing files. The chapter effectively details the issues and offers numerous valuable hardware and software-based solutions.

Chapter 14 on outsourcing and cloud computing is an area where too many attorneys are oblivious to of the security and privacy risks. For example, the authors advise attorneys against the use of the free Gmail service since the terms of service allow Google to do anything it wants with the data. That opens a Pandora's Box when it comes to securing client data. The authors advise to use premium Google business versions, so attorneys can stay in control of their data with added security and privacy features.

Two omissions in chapters 13 and 14 are that the authors don't reference NAID (National Association for Information Destruction) or the CSA (Cloud Security Alliance (CSA).

Firms that outsource their digital disposal to non-NAID certified firms run the risk of having a glorified recycler do their work. As to NAID, it is an international trade association for companies providing information destruction services. NAID's mission is to promote the information destruction industry and the standards and ethics of its member companies; while the mission of the CSA is to promote the use of best practices for providing security assurance within cloud computing and to provide education on the uses of cloud computing to help secure all other forms of computing.

The authors include many real-world stories and case law to reinforce their point.

The book closes with a number of appendices on various rules from the FTC, state information protection regulations, the SANS Institute glossary of security terms and more.

For the lawyer looking for an easy to read introduction to nearly everything they need to know about information security and privacy, the book is a great resource.

The book closes with the note that since lawyers have an ethical duty to protect their client's data, they have no choice but to keep themselves as well educated as possible.

For the attorney that wants to ensure their requirements remain current and are looking for an easy to read introduction about information security and privacy Locked Down: Information Security for Lawyers should be considered required reading.

I paid over $50 for this book in September 2012. It was delivered May 7, 2013. I anticipated the delivery eagerly. I could not be more disappointed.

Great way to end this series!

This was a great series and this book was just how it needed to be ended! Every question I had was answered! I couldn't pick my favorite character, they are all to good and important.
The plot is a little "crazy" but of course that's why it's interesting. I thought the book flowed very nicely, not over done with the little details but just enough! This isn't your typical love story, yes love is involved but it so much more! I look forward to reading more from this author! Great job!

Great set for a great mind.

Any book on positive thinking is an amazing book for me ! This one in particular is very well written and managed to show me very interesting key points on how to achieve on all the aspects of my life. I keep a very strong sense of positivism and I believe that is something that helps me accomplish great things, and this book recognizes that. The book about meditation was very good, but not that clear to me. I have to put all my mind in to accomplish the amazing thing meditation can do. I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC for an honest review. And honestly, this may be Lauren Blakely's best yet!

Far Too Tempting tells the story of Jane Black, a Grammy winning singer, for new artist. She wrote her debut album Crushed, after her husband and father of her son, left her because he was gay. She gets through her heartbreak by writing songs that reflect her desire to get through this tough time.

Matthew Harrigan is music reviewer who wants to do a series of interviews with Jane to get the true story of her music. The British hottie (!) then becomes more than friends to Jane and they embark on a lovely romance.

But there is something very special about Jane and Matthew's love story. It's not just the typical love story. Lauren takes the time to explain the intricacies of the music business, which I absolutely loved, gave the complete back story to Jane's hit album and what inspired it and even told us a bit about our eminently lickable rock journalist's background as a Baron! Not to mention all the incredible songs and artists featured throughtout. This book has it all.

Even though there is such attention to detail, I never felt bogged down by it. The book flows seamlessly, had the right about of angst but overall it was the passion these two feel for each other that kept me completely captivated. Talk about tingles down below, holy moly, Matthew and Jane's sex scenes were smoking hot!!

I can't recommend this book enough...you will not be disappointed!

There's something magical when you start a book that you've been dying to read. I've become a huge fan of Lauren Blakely and am making my way through all of her books as quick as I can. So of course the logical thing to do when you receive an email from the fabulous KP Simmon at Ink Slinger asking you to sign up for a Lauren Blakely tour, you sign up and pray you get in! Totally got it! Totally LOVED this book. It might be my favorite from Lauren Blakely, seriously hands down. Why you ask? I'll tell you why with the most vague answers because I don't want to give too much away.

So we all have gone through breaks ups right? We all have those certain songs that are made for breakups, for when we are angry, happy, and in love. Not to mention the party songs, but we can lump those in with the happy songs. Jane Black was a singer/song writer that hasn't caught a break, until now. Writing an epic breakup album that lands her in the spot she always dreamed of, but what happens after this epic album? Is she destined to only write break up ballads or can she find inspiration in something else? A reporter, Matthew Harrigan, wants to run a story on her. A behind the scenes story of Jane's musical process. He wants in her life in every way, but is it just because of his job?

This is why I love this book so much. I'm a huge fan of music, absolutely love music, and I totally fell in love with all of these characters. They each have their own quirkiness, but come together to forge something amazing. Jane's sister and brother are amazing. The fact that Owen, Jane's brother, is also her producer is amazeballs! I mean how cool would it be to sit in a studio and make magic happen with your brother? Totally would love that. Then there's Jane's sister Natalie, love her. She always has the best interest at heart. Then there's Ethan, love this kid, he reminds me of my munchkins.

But of course everything can't be perfect, how else would Jane be able to make a break up album? She was married to Aidan for quite a while and well obviously things didn't work out. Her album Crushed brought her to front and center. Now the big question... what do you write about next? Cue Matthew Harrigan. Maybe Jane just needed to feel something more than heartbreak to make her muse come alive... but does it? Matthew and Jane get close by working together on his interview, their attraction is off the charts.

"This feels so unreal, but yet here he is- wanting to kiss me. I would go into shock if I weren't completely tingling all over."

After so many years of not feeling wanted it's amazing to feel it. The way someone looks at you and desires you. The way you can't stop thinking about someone without getting flushed. The attraction and need are ever present with these two, there's no denying that. But what I really love about the way Lauren Blakely presented this story, is the way Jane falls in love again. How she struggles with the idea of it and when the realization hits, its too far gone for anything to change it. But it's not just on Jane's side. It's the way it all unfolds to come together. How trust is placed and tested. How every little moment leads up to a bigger one. Obviously I love this book, there's no denying that and if I gave star ratings I would totally give this book 10 stars. You have to pick this up and read it if you haven't.

I'm not entirely sure how I managed this...but this is the first of Lauren Blakely's books that I've read! I have a few of her book on my kindle, but I've not read them yet. That's going to change very soon, because I really enjoyed this!

Jane is so grounded, she's a mother, a friend, a sister...and just so happens to be a pretty huge rock star! Music is her life blood, and her break up album is the first time she's had real success in the music world. Her success comes with a price though- the breakdown of her marriage. So she's been burned and is filled with insecurities when it comes to men, but she just needs the right guy....
Enter Matthew Harrigan, a music journalist who makes Jane feel like a sexy, desirable woman again. I loved that he tried to restrain himself, and stay professional but he just can't resist her. He's such a gentleman, and he's got a great sense of humour. He's kind of the perfect man, and he's a fellow Englishman. And if that isn't enough, he's titled as well!

Jane and Matthew have the kind of chemistry you always hope will be in a book, it's sexy and passionate. But it's also incredibly intimate, and I loved watching their relationship develop. When Jane opens her heart up, and allows herself to trust Matthew, I was just so darned happy for them!
Jane's friends and family were brilliant, as well. They are what keep her so down to earth, and Ethan was the cutest book kid ever! I loved his card games, and HP obsession.

Far Too Tempting has all the ingredients for a perfect romance- a searing hot sexual chemistry, a sweet romance, and great, likable characters. Not to mention that Lauren Blakely's writing has a witty humour throughout that perfectly balances the pain and mistrust that Jane still struggles to move past.
