Japan - Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture, by Paul Norbury

Japan is at a crossroads. The postwar economic miracle that brought it unprecedented development and prosperity is over. Since the publication of the first Culture Smart! guide, it has been overtaken by China as the world’s second-largest economy. The balance of power in Asia has shifted and new players are entering the field. Loss of influence abroad, economic pressure at home, and the problems posed by a rapidly aging population present a real challenge to Japan’s orderly and harmonious way of life, and to the very sense the Japanese have of themselves as a nation “apart.” Traditional Japanese culture—based on a consensus-driven philosophy and underpinned by many protocols—is threatened by job insecurity, a growing class divide, and disillusionment with political leaders. But all is not lost. Japan is still a major economic power and cultural trendsetter, and the Japanese have a genius for innovation. The younger generation is open to change, women have a new confidence, and the country’s technical and scientific research capability is as good as it gets. There is a growing ecological awareness that may well translate into new forms of eco-friendly industries. No one can predict how Japan will rise to the challenge, or what effect the changes will have on how people live, think, and behave. Paul Norbury’s revised and updated edition of Culture Smart! Japan will guide you through a shifting cultural maze, and help you make your visit to this important, dynamic, and creative society a rich and mutually rewarding experience.

Very good
By MASAHIRO YOSHIZAWA
Although I'm a Japanese, I bought this book out of curiosity because I wanted to know how our country was described in English. I looked through this book and I think this book is correct, except for some some trivial matters.

For example, in page 10, a list says Japanese paper currencies are only 10000, 5000 and 1000, but in fact, there is a 2000 yen note. In page 121, this book says "When the meal arrives at your table, say "go-chiso-sama"", But I have hardly heard this phrase in this situation.

Having said that, I recommend that you read this book if you want to learn Japan from a small and compact book. Most contents are basically correct.

A different approach to Japanese culture
By Sunshine S.
This book seemed a little more balanced than most in its approach to discussing and explaining the ins and outs of Japanese culture.
At first, I thought it seemed negative and even possibly sarcastic at times. I was annoyed and almost offended. I wasn't sure I wanted to keep reading. But I was finding things in it that I hadn't learned from discussions, animes, online information, or the other books I had read such as "The Japanese Way" and "Japanese Cultural Encounters."

It didn't include personal stories nor was it academic-style. It is easy to read and easy to find what you're looking for. It's worth reading, re-reading, and keeping as a reference. It contains some useful information, including dos and don'ts and some of the not so glamorous realities of Japanese life, culture, economy. I did find some typos, which was surprising, but not anything big. The writing style was less personal and has a "unique" style compared to other Japanese culture books.

I liked it a lot and found it a good addition to my collection of books to understand the Japanese mind and way of life.
I recommend adding it even if you have other culture books.

I will note that it seems aimed at probably Americans or Europeans who have not lived in Japan, who do not speak Japanese, and who have not traveled to Japan. It's not extremely in-depth, but more a small, compact guidebook to get out when you need it and a quick, handy read overall.

Real, Practical Knowledge
By Leotol Stoy
Most books on Japan are written by scholars. As such, they have little utility in our day-to-day lives, being written in the academically sterile style preferred by a large (but thankfully dwindling) portion of the professorial population. This book is not written in the style of practiced academics, and that difference is the foundation of its utility.

As an expat (soon to be recovered), I appreciate how this book is written. When you live, visit or otherwise interact in a meaningful way with a group of people who do not share your cultural norms it is of utmost importance to understand exactly how they differ from you, and in what ways you will be able to bend the rules, and in what ways you must conform if you hope to expect a positive reception.

The best example of this cultural norms explanation can be found in the extended discussion the book gives over to gift-giving. In Japan, gift-giving is a reciprocal event that essentially begins and supports the maintenance of a relationship. As a Westerner, the expectations of gift-giving are different (one-sided gifts tied to specific events), and to take a Western view would damage, rather than strengthen, the relationship because your one-shot gift would convey a different message than what you intend to the recipient. This is, of course, just one example, and the book delves into many more areas that collectively comprise Japan's culture (food and eating habits, business expectations, role of women, etc.).

The strength of the author's voice is also what many might find to be his great weakness: the conversational tone carried throughout the book. When he conveys his message on gift-giving, and how as a Westerner you view gift-giving this way, and the Japanese another, it is as if the two of you are sitting in a coffee shop, discussing your upcoming trip and how you are planning to go about it. That is profoundly important, as it allows you to absorb the information naturally. His writing draws unforced attention to salient points that might otherwise be lost in a more rigid presentation.

As you may have guessed, both from the content of my review and other reviews written about the book, the book is primarily aimed at a Western (and especially an American) audience. There is further emphasis placed on the business angle, though that really only amounts to maybe 5-10% of the book's content. The vast majority will benefit any traveller to Japan, not just those who intend to strike business deals or work with an embassy. Highly recommended for those who would like real, practical knowledge for interacting with the most prosperous Eastern culture of the modern era.

From a leading voice among young conservatives, an impassioned argument that to stay relevant the Republican Party must look beyond short-term electoral gains and re-commit to historic conservative values.

In 1963 Richard Hofstadter published his landmark book Anti-Intellectualism in American Life. Today, Matt Lewis argues, America's inclination toward simplicity and stupidity is stronger than ever, and its greatest victim is the Republican Party. Lewis, a respected conservative columnist and frequent guest on MSNBC's Morning Joe, eviscerates the phenomenon of candidates with a "no experience required" mentality and tea party "patriots" who possess bluster but few core beliefs.

Lewis traces the conservative movement's roots, from Edmund Burke to William F. Buckley, and from Goldwater's loss to Reagan's landslide victory. He highlights visionary thinkers who understood nuance and deep ideology and changed the course of the nation. As we approach the 2016 presidential election, Lewis has an urgent message for fellow conservatives: embrace wisdom, humility, qualifications, and inclusion--or face extinction.

Review
"Lewis is a product of the conservative counterestablishment as reinvented by the Internet revolution... Lewis' knockabout style is a relief.... [He] argues that conservatives must recover the enthusiasm for ideas they had in the Reagan era."―New York Times Book Review (cover review)

"I've been reading Matt for a long time. He's always incisive and thoughtful and this book is both. Anyone who cares about the future of the Republican party should read it."―Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal columnist

"Matt K. Lewis takes the most unconventional possible approach to Washington journalism: he's completely honest all the time. Not everyone likes him for it, but that's their problem. Like Matt himself, this book is cheerful, smart and insightful as hell. Buy two copies."―Tucker Carlson, editor-in-chief of The Daily Caller, co-host of FOX & Friends Weekend

"Matt K. Lewis has fought in the trenches of some of our hottest political battles, occupying a unique position at the intersection of conservative politics and the popular culture. He brings a rare perspective to everything he writes about, and manages to look at what everyone else is looking at and see what no one sees."―Yuval Levin, editor of National Affairs

"Matt K. Lewis has written an insightful book about the roots of the conservative movement-and just how far Washington Republicans have diverged from that proud past. Too Dumb to Fail is a major achievement from one of conservatism's most important voices, and it could not come at a more critical time."―Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBC's Morning Joe

"Matt K. Lewis is one of the sharpest and most principled political commentators of our day. Too Dumb to Fail is a lively and fascinating read for any person confounded by the state of today's Republican Party. Lewis provides some much-needed tough love as well as a clear way forward for the GOP. If Republicans are smart, they'll make this book mandatory reading."―Kirsten Powers, New York Times-bestselling author of The Silencing

"Very few books about politics get my 'must read' stamp, but Matt Lewis' is one of them. Every conservative feeling as though the movement has collapsed, every Republican despairing of ever winning the White House, every independent who has no idea what to do or whom to support, should read this book immediately."―Hugh Hewitt, host of The Hugh Hewitt Show

"Too Dumb to Fail traces the evolution of conservative philosophy from Aristotle to Burke to the present in a clear and readable way that reminds us why conservatives need big ideas--and why America needs conservatism."―Arthur C. Brooks, President, American Enterprise Institute

"Too Dumb to Fail... functions as a smart, sobering pre-mortem on 2016. Now, most books about 'fixing' conservatism are written by liberal concern-trolls who secretly want to kill it. But Lewis is an actual, real-deal conservative.... This, ultimately, is what Lewis really wants: A conservative movement that honors its intellectuals, that works through its ideological problems honestly, and that doesn't rush to glorify hucksters.... If you put Donald Trump or Sarah Palin back in 1980, they couldn't last a week in the ring with the Gipper. Because back then, conservatives expected more from their leaders. Matt Lewis thinks we should expect more today, too. He's probably right."―Jonathan V. Last, The Weekly Standard

"[Lewis] does not shy away from naming names.... This book is far from a standard D.C. 'if only they listened to me' critique.... Conservatives who feel dismayed at the current state of affairs should run out and buy Lewis' book."―Henry Olsen, The Weekly Standard

"A good book... Lewis writes with panache."―The Buffalo News

"Too Dumb to Fail provides the Republican Party a roadmap to get back to its intellectual foundations. With the rise of Donald Trump and Sarah Palin, the book perfectly represents the state of the Republican Party and where it's headed if it doesn't return to its core beliefs... Prescient."―Christian Schneider, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

"Lewis ... has probed the true makeup of today's GOP."―Washington Post

"Lewis' book offers a wise and far-reaching and brave take on how we got here and what conservatives must do to enlist the 'accumulated wisdom of the past to make our future even brighter.'... Too Dumb to Fail is worth reading and pondering, because we are watching many of the themes Lewis pinpoints play out in real time ... Too Dumb to Fail is a great summing up. It's also practical and specific. Earnest, witty and well-meaning, Lewis is more of a truth-teller than a diplomat or glad-hander. He names names.... This will not make [Lewis] popular. After the November 2016 elections, however, it may make Matt Lewis something of a prophet."―Washington Times

"Right from the beginning, Lewis shows the courage to take on conventional wisdoms in modern conservatism, and that alone makes his book essential."―Craig Shirley, Newsmax

"A great read... Really worth reading and thinking about."―Newt Gingrich (via Facebook)

“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” Edmund Burke
By Kristi Richardson
I firmly believe that you cannot be a political animal and not read what the opposition is writing. I must admit that some pundits I can only read so much and then I have to put it away, because it is not based on facts or ideas but on vitriol and stirring things up by repeating falsehoods. This book by Matt K. Lewis is not like these others. I read it all the way through and enjoyed it for the most part.

Mr. Lewis takes us through the beginning of the Conservative movement and I found his history engrossing. I used to laugh at William F. Buckley’s way of speaking but I never doubted his education and spirit. Nowadays the GOP and the Conservatives have dumbed their selves down so much, that if you don’t act as if you never read a book or newspaper, you won’t be elected. He shows examples of that with Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. If you think about it, how do you go to Yale and not get some knowledge? How do you become a doctor and not have some brains? Yet the people running for office act as if they are just regular folks and don’t get any knowledge outside of the Bible. In the end that will hurt their message.

Mr. Lewis points out specific steps that Conservatives need to take to modernize not moderate. I think our nation is stronger when both sides are strong and viable. The way it’s going now, the Democratic Party may have lopsided power in the future if the GOP doesn’t learn from this book.

I am a lifelong Democrat and while I used to say a “bleeding heart liberal”, as I age I will say I am more moderate and definitely not a democratic socialist. I think Mr. Lewis’ book is well written and should be required reading for anyone interested in politics.

Too Dumb to Fail is a winner.
By Steve
Too Dumb To Fail is a page turner for sure. Given the title of the book, you might suspect the book was written by a vitriolic blonde bomb-thrower from Fox News. Fortunately for those of us who want to win and grow the movement, this is not the case. The subtitle of the book illustrates its true purpose: How the GOP Betrayed the Reagan Revolution to Win Elections (and How It Can Reclaim Its Conservative Roots).

Too Dumb to Fail moves at a nice pace because Matt Lewis is an interesting writer. He writes clearly and does not overcomplicate topics that are easy to muddy-up. The difference between Matt Lewis and so many other writers is that he cares about the conservative movement. He is not looking back at 40 to 60 years of activism and then condemning everything about the future. Matt Lewis is as much a part of the future of our movement as he is a part of its past. Some of us campaign-types heard Matt teach sessions at party conventions. Matt's ability to teach us to talk, is perhaps what makes him such a good writer. He is not a lecturer; he is a teacher.

That eventually leads us to a really interesting chapter that discusses the hucksters who fleece our movement of dollars, yet produce nothing. Lewis humorously identifies these people as the Con$ervative Movement. For instance, Lewis writes about a group of PACs that spent roughly $54 million, but not quite $4 million of that was actually spent on getting Republicans elected. $50 million in conservative dollars wasted, possibly extorted, just in the 2014 election cycle alone. That story will get your blood boiling.

Lewis similarly discusses the 2013 Virginia race for Governor where Ken Cuccinelli nobly took on Terry McAuliffe. One group took in over $2 million saying they were going to help get Cuccinelli elected, yet they spent "less than one-half of one percent" on Cuccinelli's losing campaign. Lewis also briefly touches upon "Joe the Plumber" (a phenomenon I never understood) and his brief stay in the limelight of the Con$ervative Movement.

There are so many great examples in this book that really highlight the problems we are up against, even within our own movement. Lewis points to absurd statistics thrown out by Donald Trump, which is one thing. Then we realize he got the phony statistics from one of Ann Coulter's books, and the statistics have been thoroughly discredited. Then there is Donald Trump's lack of understanding that the money that funds Planned Parenthood "is fungible." Followed later by Ann Coulter declaring, this time via Twitter, in response to Donald Trump's immigration plan, “I don’t care if [Donald Trump] wants to perform abortions in White House after this immigration policy paper.”

Lewis puts great emphasis throughout this book on intellectual thought in the Republican party, more of it in the distant past than in its present. Ours is a movement founded upon solid philosophical and intellectual arguments and principles. Lewis is not writing this to tell us that we are dumb now. He is telling us why this intellectual foundation matters. "When you lose intellectuals, you lose popular culture and, before you know it, you've lost the culture war," writes Lewis.

Why did Obama’s "you didn't build that" remark not really matter to the outcome of the 2012 election? Lewis has an interesting take on this in the wider view of our culture wars.

Lewis challenges us not to simply walk away from pop culture, but rather to influence it and affect it. "Christian conservatives must work to authentically engage the culture, instead of trying to ape what's already popular." As Lewis notes later, "By first rejecting the culture and turning inward, and then focusing almost solely on politics, conservatives now find themselves increasingly shut out of major conversations that average Americans are interested in." Lewis arrives at a sensible and pragmatic solution, "The answer is for conservatives to make good art, not necessarily to make conservative art."

Do you think pop culture and the conservative movement do not go together? Lewis correctly points out that, "Winning elections means having a tent big enough to attract a majority." He follows that up later with an entire chapter titled, "Modernize, Don't Moderate." He was right to do this because too often the "big tent" concept gets labeled as something it is not, and those in pursuit of a bigger tent are labeled as well.

We have some demographic realities to face. Whether it is race, education, age, location, or marital status, our movement is losing ground in many of the numbers that matter. Lewis writes, "the conservative moment appears to want to keep the GOP a party almost exclusively for older, whiter, more rural Americans." He continues, "For Reagan-Kemp conservatives, this is a philosophical and mathematical problem." Rather than "doubling down on cohorts that are losing population," Lewis is instead suggesting ways that we can grow the movement without dumbing down our principles.

On election day 2012, when Mitt Romney would fall short of unseating an incumbent President, exit poll respondents were asked about four qualities of each candidate, Romney and Obama. Mitt Romney won on three of the four qualities, but it was the one quality that Obama won that made all the difference. On the question about which candidate "cares about people like me," Obama won in a landslide. Lewis tells us what that number was, and why it matters.

Lewis has a message for talk radio hosts, read the book to see it, it is important.

So, what should conservatives do today? Lewis writes, "The real answer, I suggest, is to look to the Reagan model-but not in a way that looks backward or assumes nominating a hard-core conservative is a panacea. Reagan looked to the future, and so should we." This will not be easy, change is tough. But change can also be our missing ingredient. The reality about the Right, is as Lewis notes, "it has to be better, stronger, tougher, smarter." Too Dumb to Fail can help with all of that.

Finally, readers will get twenty book suggestions at the end. I am going to do what every author wants done and suggest you get a copy of the book and read the list (and the entire book) for yourself. Lewis' book suggestions are not typical. If you go in expecting to see books by Sean Hannity, Dick Morris or Michael Savage, or any of Ann Coulter's books, you will be disappointed. This list is deeper than all of that.

There is so much more in this book. For instance, what is pastor Tim Keller doing that is worth replicating within the conservative movement? What are "Ideological Immigrants"? Why are we implored to "Teach Your Children Well"? What about think tanks that are now becoming activists as well? What is "The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind"? And what is the reality about how to "Appeal to Hispanics"?

This all amounts to a very interesting book at a very good time.

I have intentionally been vague on many of the topics discussed in Too Dumb to Fail because I want to really encourage you to read this book. It is a quick read, it is succinct and well written, it is a critique and not a condemnation, and perhaps as important, it is aspirational. Too Dumb to Fail is a book I will go back to over the next few years and make sure I have properly implemented many of the suggestions that Lewis makes.

As a final tease for Too Dumb to Fail, any book that can recall a scene from the baseball movie Bull Durham, which involves a great scene between Crash Davis and Nuke LaLoosh, and can relate that to political messaging, that's a job well done. Enjoy.

A Unique Perspective into the Conservative Movement! A Must Read! A+++
By Carbonlord
Matt Lewis is a super conservative writer, he is independent minded and an excellent columnist. I’ve seen him a number of times on CNN, ABC’s Nightline and HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. I was fortunate enough to get an advance copy of this book, which was an eye opener all the way to the end. I was looking forward to this book, after watching him speak so many times before.

Imagine that in the infancy of the book, Matt started with a purpose of showing us the sort of populist anti-intellectualism that has been bubbling over and throughout our current political campaigns of the Republican party? Could he have ever guessed that Trump would be there, now? Perhaps he knew?

In his quote, “empty-headed talking point reciters, rookie politicians who’ve never managed anything in their lives, media clowns such as Donald Trump, dim bulbs in tight pants or short skirts, professionally outraged shout-fest talking heads and total political neophytes,” He stipulates how he feels where the conservative movement has been led to.

He was also quoted, stating;

"Although I think that conservative media outlets help — they've helped expose liberal hypocrisy, forced stories into the mainstream — there's also a downside."

“they don't even have to say anything conservative; all they have to do is criticize Obama and we go gaga and we eat it up.”

Lewis talks about the age of politicians trying to create more hypocrisy and outrage, than in the actual principles of governing. Creating a vicious circle of this, in order to obtain more funding, to create more outrage and so it goes on and on and on…..

Matt Lewis concludes his book, by believing that conservatives really need to bring more enthusiasm about their originality of ideas, as they had shown in the Reagan era. I thought the book was insightful, how he traced an insightful book the roots of the conservative movement and showed, in his options, just how far they have strayed form their original ideals. Hope it Helps:)

Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation, by Lynne Truss

The spirited and scholarly #1 New York Times bestseller combines boisterous history with grammar how-to’s to show how important punctuation is in our world—period.

In Eats, Shoots & Leaves, former editor Lynne Truss, gravely concerned about our current grammatical state, boldly defends proper punctuation. She proclaims, in her delightfully urbane, witty, and very English way, that it is time to look at our commas and semicolons and see them as the wonderful and necessary things they are. Using examples from literature, history, neighborhood signage, and her own imagination, Truss shows how meaning is shaped by commas and apostrophes, and the hilarious consequences of punctuation gone awry.

Featuring a foreword by Frank McCourt, and interspersed with a lively history of punctuation from the invention of the question mark in the time of Charlemagne to George Orwell shunning the semicolon, Eats, Shoots & Leaves makes a powerful case for the preservation of proper punctuation.

From Publishers Weekly
Who would have thought a book about punctuation could cause such a sensation? Certainly not its modest if indignant author, who began her surprise hit motivated by "horror" and "despair" at the current state of British usage: ungrammatical signs ("BOB,S PETS"), headlines ("DEAD SONS PHOTOS MAY BE RELEASED") and band names ("Hear'Say") drove journalist and novelist Truss absolutely batty. But this spirited and wittily instructional little volume, which was a U.K. #1 bestseller, is not a grammar book, Truss insists; like a self-help volume, it "gives you permission to love punctuation." Her approach falls between the descriptive and prescriptive schools of grammar study, but is closer, perhaps, to the latter. (A self-professed "stickler," Truss recommends that anyone putting an apostrophe in a possessive "its"-as in "the dog chewed it's bone"-should be struck by lightning and chopped to bits.) Employing a chatty tone that ranges from pleasant rant to gentle lecture to bemused dismay, Truss dissects common errors that grammar mavens have long deplored (often, as she readily points out, in isolation) and makes elegant arguments for increased attention to punctuation correctness: "without it there is no reliable way of communicating meaning." Interspersing her lessons with bits of history (the apostrophe dates from the 16th century; the first semicolon appeared in 1494) and plenty of wit, Truss serves up delightful, unabashedly strict and sometimes snobby little book, with cheery Britishisms ("Lawks-a-mussy!") dotting pages that express a more international righteous indignation.

From Booklist
This impassioned manifesto on punctuation made the best-seller lists in Britain and has followed suit here. Journalist Truss gives full rein to her "inner stickler" in lambasting common grammatical mistakes. Asserting that punctuation "directs you how to read in the way musical notation directs a musician how to play," Truss argues wittily and with gusto for the merits of preserving the apostrophe, using commas correctly, and resurrecting the proper use of the lowly semicolon. Filled with dread at the sight of ubiquitous mistakes in store signs and headlines, Truss eloquently speaks to the value of punctuation in preserving the nuances of language. Liberally sprinkling the pages with Briticisms ("Lawks-a-mussy") and moving from outright indignation to sarcasm to bone-dry humor, Truss turns the finer points of punctuation into spirited reading. Hilarious Professional Development for English Teachers
By BT Invictus
Once I built up some immunity against the author's relentless snobbery, I thoroughly enjoyed Eats, Shoots & Leaves. I've always been somewhat suspicious of the person who makes a habit of publicly shaming any individual unlucky enough to use poor grammar and punctuation in her presence - a habit she justifies with the rather transparent and eye-roll-inducing excuse, "I just love the English language too much to let the errors slide!" It seems there is always an ulterior motive at play: like Mom always said, "The bully who puts others down might just feel insecure about himself." If Mom's words are true, this author has one major inferiority complex.

But, although she is a bit of a curmudgeon (beware of the preface), she's quite funny; I found myself appreciating her sense of humor when it wasn't being used at the expense of the poor chap with bad punctuation. And it's true that we seem to have reached an all-time low when it comes to our knowledge of punctuation's proper usage. Who can disagree with her when she argues that it is in our best interest to refresh our memory for the sake of the clarity and style of our writing? There were definitely a few places where she clarified some usage rules for me.

In addition to being an engaging and fascinating read for anyone who is interested in English, this book is an amazing resource for writing teachers. It's full of examples of what happens when punctuation goes bad, examples that my students actually enjoyed. (I'm not kidding; they even laughed out loud at a few!) Here's just a small sampling of what she offers the writing instructor in the way of helpful illustrations:

After explaining some rules for the much-abused apostrophe, she writes:

I apologise if you know all this, but the point is many, many people do not. Why else would they open a large play area for children, hang up a sign saying "Giant Kid's Playground", and then wonder why everyone stays away from it? (Answer: everyone is scared of the Giant Kid.) - page 41

When discussing the comma, she writes:

...readers grow so accustomed to the dwindling incidence of commas in public places that when signs go up saying "No dogs please", only one person in a thousand bothers to point out that actually, as a statement, "no dogs please" is an indefensible generalisation, since many dogs do please, as a matter of fact; they rather make a point of it. - page 81

Another aspect of the book that I found really rewarding is her discussion of how punctuation influences style. It's true that much of her stylistic rules may seem rather arbitrary (for example, when she argues that dashes warmly welcome an aside while a pair parentheses treat the aside like more of an intruder). Even still, I found it interesting to think about how punctuation can subtly and not-so-subtly influence the tone and message of my writing. And pretty much of all of her arguments are persuasive, even if they are somewhat subjective.

So, in closing, if you have a high tolerance for elitism and even a remote interest in writing, I heartily recommend this book. English teachers, especially, should get their hands on this one.

Eat, Shoots and Leaves is a fun and erudite way to learn our punctuation from Lynn Truss
By C. M Mills
Eats. Shoots and Leaves is a little bestselling guide to punctuation that has been a big bestseller. Former editor and grammatical guru Lynn Truss has done a great job in explaining the sometimes arcane way in which punctuation is important in English grammar. You will learn all the rules of usage and the history of such grammatical indicators as the apostrophe, comma, semicolon, colon/ The style is witty and wise. As a former English Literature teacher on a high school level I would recommend this book to teachers wanting to present these valuable lessons in a way which will educate students. A short but valuable classic of its kind!

Really fun read!
By maruski
My ability to puctuate correctly was adequate, but I wanted to be better. I got this book and found it to be an enirely enjoyable read; it gives you confidence to use even the the more unusual punctuation marks correctly...

...and it's humerous too boot!

While the author is from the UK and explains usage common in that region, she also remarks on US usage where it differs. I was surprised to learn that there were regional differences and also that the proper use of punctuation marks is changing--and it always has over time.

In addition to being a book that comments on the use (or common misuse) of proper puctuation it is also organized in such a way that people who write can reference a certain item (do you have to use a period after Mr?) and read up if they have a question.

People writing e-books might especially appreciate this as many write without an editor; a fun book that makes punctuation accessible without suffering through Strunk and White is very welcome.

A nice collection of audio adventures.
By Alan L. Brown
This is a collection of three full cast audio adventures involving the Torchwood crew, or at least those of the crew who survived the second TV season. The actors are great, and as engaging on audio as they are on the screen. The stories are compelling, and the production is top notch. With three adventures in the set, this is a good value. Great for listening in the car during a long trip.

Torchwood the Lost Files
By Roger & Cyndy Wilber
Among the three stories, The "House of the Dead" was by far the most excellent. What it lacks in actions it makes up for in its surprise ending and ties in especially well with "The Children of the Earth" movie.
