Worst textbook ever

This book is a terrible textbook.The material is general and generic, and is mostly common sense for anyone with the slightest knowledge of public health. For instance, the book is replete with sentences such as "public health is a very important issue" or "there are many challenges facing public health." It lacks structure and organization that would enable the material to flow in a cohesive and logical manner so it basically jumps around from subject to subject without quite making sense. Additionally, I found the writing to be superfluous as the authors take a whole page to explain a "concept" that could be explained in a sentence. An incredible waste of money, and certainly not a good reference book for those of us in public health.

About the Author

MWH is a global consulting firm with more than 7,000 professionals and 180 offices in thirty-five countries, that provides services to a full range of water-related projects and programs ranging from water supply, treatment and storage, dams, water management for the natural resources industry, and coastal restoration to renewable power and environmental service. MWH employees wrote the first edition of this book.

JOHN C. CRITTENDEN is Director of the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems as well as Hightower Chair and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology.

R. RHODES TRUSSELL is the founder of Trussell Technologies and former senior vice president at MWH. He is Chair of the Water Science and Technology Board for the National Academies and, in 2010, was awarded the prestigious A. P. Black Research Award from the American Water Works Association.

DAVID W. HAND is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Michigan Technological University. He has authored or coauthored over 130 technical publications including six textbooks, two patents, and eight copyrighted software programs.

KERRY J. HOWE is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of New Mexico and former principal engineer at MWH. His teaching and research focuses on water quality, membrane processes, desalination, and advanced water treatment technologies.

GEORGE TCHOBANOGLOUS is Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Davis. He is the author or coauthor of more than 300 technical papers and a number of textbooks, including Wastewater Engineering: Treatment and Reuse and Water Reuse.

Typos Galore

While the authors and MWH are surely expects in water treatment, this text is very difficult to comprehend due to the enormous amount of typos. In each chapter the reader can expect to find several among the tables, text and examples. Not sure if this is the fault of the authors or the publisher but I would advise professors to think twice before using the book as a primary text - at least until these issues are addressed. I'll be sending a letter to the publisher in the near future asking for a partial refund. Not only does the poor editing affect my ability to learn from this text, but it results in an enormous expenditure of time trying to figure out where typos exist so that I may complete assignments.

P.S. I should mention that I'm waiting on the hardcover version and have been working off the electronic version. However, juxtaposition with the hardcover version possessed by others has yielded no difference thus far.

Very difficult to follow, plenty of typos

I found this book difficult to follow. One would think that the objective was for the authors to demonstrate their knowledge of the material while doing as much as possible to ensure that no one else could understand it!

Chapters are lengthy, and at the same time have little in the way of explanation of the material within. Example problems are few and the ones that are there are difficult to follow because they lack proper explanation.

Marine biologist Earle (Sea Change) makes a compelling argument that the ocean, rather than space, is the next frontier waiting to be explored in this personable photoessay. In the opening chapter, Earle tells how her curiosity about what lives in the sea was first sparked and describes her delight at early underwater excursions using a snorkel and, later, scuba gear. Four subsequent chapters recount seminal events in Earle's career: studying whales in their natural habitats from Hawaii to Glacier Bay, Alaska; spending two weeks working as an "aquanaut" in the Tektite underwater laboratory, 50 feet below the surface of the ocean; sporting a special underwater diving suit called "Jim" (originally designed for salvage operations) to conduct research at 1250 feet; and helping to create Deep Rover, a mini-submarine able to descend to depths of 3000 feet. The book's final chapter, a plea for protecting the earth's oceans from becoming a dumping ground, is eloquent but does not flow naturally from the rest of the book. Earle writes with immediacy and specificity; readers will feel as if they are swimming along beside her as she forays into the ocean's darkest depths. Close-ups of a humpback whale's tail or a jellyfish illustrate points in the text; photographs like the one of Earle walking the sea floor off of the Bahama Islands in her "Jim" diving suit next to an American flag drive home her point that sea and space are equally worth exploring. Ages 8-up.

Grade 4-7-Earle uses a winning combination of factual information and genuine enthusiasm to encourage a new generation of aquanauts. After describing her early interest in the sea and her first scuba dive ("...in my mind I had been transformed irreversibly into a sea creature who henceforth would spend part of the time above water"), the marine biologist shares some of her experiences. She traveled from Hawaii to Alaska to study humpback whales; lived and worked for two weeks in an underwater laboratory; descended 1250 feet in an astronautlike deep-diving suit to do research; and helped design, build, and man a submersible called Deep Rover. Whether she is describing an intimate moment of communication with a giant whale or relating her startling discovery of a "strange creature" at 3000 feet (it turned out to be a soda can), Earle interests, entertains, and informs readers. The final chapter makes a gentle plea for protecting marine habitats. Large, full-color, carefully captioned photographs provide a porthole into the wonders of the sea, showing the variety of life on a coral reef or a jellyfish moving through open water. A respectful, sincere, and inviting look at the final frontier.

Sylvia inspires new generations of under sea explorers with the beautiful book filled with color photos.
I got this book for my 8-year-old niece to go with the "Animal Planet's Giant Squid & Diving Suit" toy action set.

Informative Fun

Earle has done a wonderful job of introducing readers to the joy of exploring both the oceans and personal goals. Earle uses a conversational tone with stunning photos in this autobiographical tale. Both children (9-12 is the target age and as a read aloud for younger children) and their parents will find this to be an excellent gateway into the underwater world. Budding marine biologists will marvel as their dreams (like swimming with whales) are described. They will finish the book with their own dreams reinforced.
