Americana At Its Best

This is the 3rd book in a 4 book series and all 4 books are worth buying. I've read all 4 and my two favorites are this one and the first, "Harmony." However, "Hooked" and "Hearts", #s 2 and 4, are hot on their heels. An enormously satsifying aspect to "Honey" is that it recounts in detail the early history of baseball and puts us right into the heart of an early team that tours the USA around the turn of the century. I have very fond memories of baseball because my grandfather took me to the Cleveland games when I was a child. This book tapped into the love of the game and in its early days you also see the sport in its purer form before millions of dollars were attached to its every move.

This is not boring history though because the author has put us among some very lovable characters who play on and own the team. The hero is a former big city player who plays for this Montana team in order to raise money to help his friend Cap who needs extensive medical work for a head injury. Unlike their big city counterparts, most of these ballplayers are drawn from the community and work other jobs but are making time for baseball to make a professional team a reality for their town. The heroine is the daughter of the team's owner. He is forced to let his daughter run the team when his owner-partner is the man he most despises in town. That new partner insists that anyone but he manage the team. This is a wonderful, touching love story between these two protagonists and also a powerful tale of the ups and downs of a life in baseball during the turn of century in America. I highly recommend it.

A honey of a romance

In 1898, Baltimore Orioles star, Alex "Grizz" Cordova has a running dispute with New York Giants catcher Joe McGill. However, their rivalry turns ugly when Joe crowds Grizz as he swings the bat. Soon afterward, Grizz quits baseball.

Three years later, the new American League has formed to include a franchise, the Harmony Keystones, in Montana. The team owned by acerbic James Kennison loses its first thirteen games. Desperate for a win, James vows that anyone who can get Alex Cordova, a woodworker living in Harmony, to join the team will manage the Keystones. James's daughter Camille pulls off the coup. Alex signs a contract because he needs money to take his friend, Captain, to Buffalo for special treatment of a brain injury that appears to be worsening. She takes over as the manager, but her new star fails to produce because he seems reluctant to really throw the ball. As Camille tries to understand why, she begins to fall in love with Alex, who reciprocates her feelings. Will that be enough to overcome the tragedy that keeps him from making any commitment beyond the Captain?

HONEY is a fabulous historical romance that centers on a 1901 professional baseball team. The story is filled with authentic references to players like Cy Young, whose personalities seem as real today as those of Sammy, Mark, and Junior. Alex is a great character who takes full responsibilities for his actions. Until love for the team and Alex hits her, Camille wants to gain the respect of her father who sees her solely as a dumb beauty. The third novel in Stef Ann Holm's "Brides for All Seasons" series will gain the author an MVW (Most Valuable writer) award.

The Best I've Ever Read!

Even though I absolutely hate baseball this book gave me the chance to appreciate the sport for what it was a hundred years ago. Unlike today, baseball was about the love of the game rather than the love of the money. As far as the characters go I absolutely loved all of the Keystones baseball players. Each on had a distinctive personality that gave the book its unique light. Adding to this were the two lovers and sweethearts Alex Cordova and Camille Kennison. The sensuality between these two characters lit up the entire book. The author truly displayed her extraordinary talent for romance writing when she created the creative love scenes between the two. What I also appreciate about this book is how the author portrayed Camille as a moderm-minded woman who knew what she wanted and had no trouble going after it. My only problem with the book is the ridiculous hats that Camille always wore and the author's inclination to describe each one with painstaking precision. However,that is a minor thing in comparison to all of the good qualities of this book.

Gouache images that seem to glow in the dark deftly recall the silent film era, craftily luring in readers even before the tale's famous opener, " `Will you walk into my parlor?' said the Spider to the Fly." An exterior view of a darkened mansion, its sole light coming from an attic window, gives way to a close-up of the same window as a petite dragonfly in flapper attire (complete with fringed dress, long gloves and flower-petal parasol) peers inside at Spider's lair: a Victorian dollhouse set amid cobwebby attic treasures. With an arsenal of Vincent Price expressions, the well-heeled Spider uses food and flattery to entice his guest into staying within his walls. Some of the text appears periodically against a framed black backdrop, … la silent movie captions, while a silvery web is progressively woven in the background. Finely detailed scenes foreshadow Fly's demise with subtle, Charles Addams-esque humor that, while it may escape younger readers, will tickle the Lemony Snicket set. (In one scene, previous insect victims, now ghosts with their feet hovering above the floor, hold up a copy of The Joy of Cooking Bugs, in a vain warning to Fly.) DiTerlizzi has spun a visual treat that young sophisticates and adults alike will enjoy. Ages 6-up.

Grade 1-6-Most people are familiar with Howitt's poem, but DiTerlizzi's art raises this hackneyed classic to a new level. Rendered in black-and-white gouache and pencil, then reproduced in silver-and-black duotone, the paintings have a spooky quality perfectly suited to retelling this melancholy tale. Ms. Fly, with her whimsical flower umbrella and Roaring '20s attire, captures the flavor of an old-time Hollywood heroine. Her nemesis, seated on his Victorian chair, is dressed like a pasha in silk robe and slippers (six, of course) or resplendent in tails, top hat, and spats; he is clearly a dastardly fiend cloaked in splendid apparel to dazzle his victim. Wispy, transparent, ghostly shapes haunt the eerie mansion; the white print on the black pages stands out against the shadows creeping across each spread. All of these elements foreshadow the fly's untimely demise. With its tragic ending, heavy moralizing, and sophisticated artwork, this book will appeal to older children as well as to adult fans of old horror movies. This title is worth purchasing for its valuable artwork alone.

Gr. 2-5. There's no question about the villain in this version of Howitt's familiar 1829 poem about the vain, silly fly and the cunning spider who does her in. The smarmy visage of the spider leering at Miss Fly, who is sweetly attired in fringed flapper garb, says plenty. The melodrama is wonderful: Miss Fly--hand on forehead, hand on heart, two hands outstretched in protest (and two legs, of course, makes six)--declares, "Oh no, no . . . Kind sir, that cannot be. / I've heard what's in your pantry and I do not wish to see." Diaphanous ghosts of Spider's previous victims float nearby, but they're unable to change the fate of Miss Fly, who falls victim to Spider's flattery and her own pleasing reflection in a bottle-cap looking glass. Older children will be most likely to catch the intricacies in the monochromatic artwork--the various poses of the multiple appendages, the butterfly-wing curtains, and other delightfully creepy buggy details. Only a few will think past the story and wonder about the fact that most spiders are female. Stephanie Zvirin

Little fly, little fly, fly away home

Some picture books instantly impress. They have that extra little spark or oomph that sets them apart from the rest. At first, the idea of a modern illustrator reworking a cautionary tale from 1829 sounds as if it's in danger of becoming dull, preachy, or didactic. Then you take a single glance at Tony DiTerlizzi's reworking of Mary Howitt's poem, "The Spider and the Fly", and you're blown away. Referencing the silent films of the 1920s and 30s, the book is meant to guide youngsters on the path of wisdom. Presumably by showing the stupidity of flies.

We all know the great opening lines of this tale. " `Will you walk into my parlor?' said the Spider to the Fly". Here we see our villain, the gorgeously outfitted spider, bowing deeply to a lovely lady fly that bears no little resemblance to Shelly Duvall. The spider himself is replete with walking cane, spats on each of his legs, slick dandified hair, a Rhett Butler moustache, and a long top hat. The fly's initial answer (a negative) shows her in her best flapper wear. She has the parasol, the delicately gloved arms, the handbag, bobbed antennae, and flapper hat. The spider is persistent, now donning a smoking jacket and fez as various buggy ghosts of his past victims attempt to warn the little fly away. Finally, after many attempts, the spider flatters the fly with tales of her beauty. She falls for it instantly and returns when the spider calls, "Your robes are green and purple - there's a crest upon your head; Your eyes are like the diamond bright, but mine are dull as lead". She comes, he pops her in his long hat, and the next thing we know she's tied up tight in a cocoon with the shadow of a spider (cook's hat on head, knife and fork in hand) laughingly approach her. The moral of the story is, as William Bennett once said, "Not everyone who talks sweetly offers sweets".

It's not every picture book that the villain not only wins but also gets his own especial afterword. NOT written by Mary Howitt, the spider has his say. He points out that all spiders are trappers, even the beloved Charlotte from E.B. White's classic book. As we read we see the now full spider, his spatted feet on the table, delicately wiping his mouth on his napkin. A little hat sits forlornly on the plate before him. Thus ends a truly delightful book. DiTerlizzi has taken the time to include a couple facts about the life of the author Howitt, which is great. As an illustrator, the black and white scheme used for these illustrations is marvelous. These pictures were rendered beautifully and each shot is cinematic. There is little doubt, certainly, that some children will be perturbed by the pretty little fly's untimely end. I might point out, however, that there are also some children out there that are perturbed by the death of Charlotte in the aforementioned, "Charlotte's Web". Most kids, I believe, will love this book. It's noteworthy to point out that the blurbs on the back of the book come from Henry Selick (director of the "Nightmare Before Christmas") and Lance Smith (of "The Stinky Cheese Man" fame). Both of these should give you a fair idea of the kind of book this is. It's dark without ever becoming gory. Intense without ever being graphic. And, most importantly of all, it's a joy to look at. Who knew 19th century poems could be so much fun?

"You cannot even imagine a happy, fulfilled person whose life is in a state of disorganization and disarray," he writes. Assuming that readers don’t have the time to camp in an armchair and mull over his advice, Tracy "chunks up" the book by using headings to subdivide chapters and peppering his prose with numbered lists, such as the "12 Proven Principles for Peak Performance" and the "16 Ways to Overcome Procrastination." Great book, contains a lot of practical tips for improving time management. It gets you to think deeply about your life & what is important to you, so you can allocate time accordingly. I saw an instant improvement in my time management as soon as i started reading the book.

Best Time Management Book I've Read

Best time management Book I've read in over 40 years. This book summerizes the best of all of Brian Tracy's previous work, so this book is the Brian Tracy book to get. I wish I had this book 38 years ago book I was 14. In fact, I'm going to pay my daughter to read this book this summer.

A lot of repeated material

Time Power by Brian Tracy is about taking control of your schedule so that you free up more time to do more and more. Using strategies like using a organizer, figuring out what your goals and priorities are, and things like refusing to take coffee breaks are examples of what can be found in this book.

The advice in this book is solid. I especially liked the chapters on organizing your tasks by priority, developing excellent work habits, and overcoming procrastination. The ideas presented are logical and beneficial to maintaining a highly productive lifestyle, while they remain practical and easy to implement.

However I felt I had read this book before because many of the ideas presented in this book are repeated in his other books. I found very little content in the book that was actually new. I also thought the chapter "Time Management Techniques for Salespeople" didn't belong in this book. That chapter should have been in a book directed to salespeople rather than a general audience, and which made me think it was just added for the sake of adding material.

This book is a good read if you never have read Brian Tracy material before, or if you would like to review Brian Tracy's material again. But if you are looking for new material, best to steer clear. 3 out of 5 stars.

Very GOOD and ... very DEMANDING!

I purchased ROUTLEDGE COLLOQUIAL DUTCH after having covered both (a) Pimsleur Comprehensive Dutch and (b) Michel Thomas Total Dutch. Here's what I found:

PRELUDE: PIMSLEUR or MICHEL THOMAS
Both Pimsleur Comprehensive Dutch and Michel Thomas Total Dutch provide a very basic introduction to the Dutch language. The approaches are somewhat similar, but far from identical. Both will help you achieve a "feel" for the language, but not much else. However, on completion, owing to the presentation of only very limited vocabulary, you will not be evenly remotely autonomous in Dutch and you will have to continue your studies, even if your goal is simply to make yourself understood as a traveller to the Netherlands or to Flemish-speaking part of Belgium. Nonetheless, I highly recommend that you commence your self-study programme with one of these two courses as a prelude to Routledge Colloquial Dutch. It takes about a month to cover either one of these courses. You need not try both.

ROUTLEDGE COLLOQUIAL DUTCH
Many of the Routledge Colloquial courses are deliberately limited in scope and are meant to meet the only the very basic linguistic needs of a traveller. Be forewarned that this is NOT the case with Routledge Colloquial Dutch! The author has created a COMPLETE BASIC Dutch course, replete with excellent explanations of grammar, written exercises, a fair amount of vocabulary, and very challenging dialogues that are delivered at what I would describe as "near-native-speed"; that is, much faster than either the Pimsleur or Michel Thomas courses. Be prepared to listen to, and practice, the dialogues dozens upon dozens of times! With a view to being able to APPLY your knowledge, in a "real life setting", you will need to devote about 300 hours of study to this course.

BOOK AND CDs SOLD SEPARATELY
Prospective buyers should be aware that the BOOK and the 2 CDs that accompany it are often sold SEPARATELY. This is NOT all that clear on Amazon. So, be very careful about what you're ordering and ensure that you purchase BOTH the book and the cds, as they are rather useless, one without the other. You can also purchase them as a package directly from Routledge, via their website.

Superrific

I said it once, I've said it again: Mal is a master of teenage, female angst. Which, I suppose is sorta strange when Mal happens to be a tall Korean-Canadian male. ;-) In this delightful graphic novel, Mal delves into his inner-femme and talks about the percarious bridge between youth and adulthood. His cutesy anime-esque style only serves to emphasize this transition. It's not quite messy, but it's not quite clean either. Fan-freaking-tastic.
Some people may not get the book merely because they haven't had similar experiences happen in their lives. Also, the narration occasionally makes a turn for melo-drama, in a soap-opera kind of way, and he tries occasionally to make things seem deeper than it may actually be (though, it could be argued that is how all teenage women treat events in their lives, thus the direction is waranted); but, the steady, consistent feel and interesting character interactions make up for it.
But, if you believe in first loves, unexpected friendships, and the realization it's OK to be scared, to be stupid, to make mistakes, to break away from childhood, to make peace with fate, and that everything will turn out well in the end... read this novel. Because, not only is it pretty, it's also true.

This Rhubarb Pie tastes oddly like Apple Pie.

So, the book is good, right? I don't know what else to say. I've been captivated by Mal's work for awhile now, (as evidenced in my own recent work.) so buying the book was simply a matter of having the money to do so. Second nature being held back by minor outside forces.
The story is interesting, and really does speak volumes about a generation of kids (ie ME) who grew up and found themselves just outside the world. Like it was just out of reach and if only we could gather the courage to leave the house more often, we could see it and experience it. And the only way we end up truly experiencing it and finding ourselves is if we are forced into it. And how we often hate the present we're in but look back on it with nostalgia, wishing we had it back. Not necessarily to do things differently, but just relive those feelings.
Plus Mal's characters all do these cute little manga-esque things and the book smells pretty good too.

a beautfiul voyage on the road of self-discovery

i first learned of "Lost at Sea" (and Bryan Lee O'Malley) by reading the Lost At Sea comic strips on the Oni Press webpage. after reading all of the web strips, i started visiting Mal's webpage and became an avid fan. thus, i had been waiting for this book to come out for close to two years.
its rare that i say something like this, but it was worth the wait.
i have read a LOT of graphic novels in the past few years, and the only one that moved me more than Lost at Sea was Craig Thompson's "Blankets." (Mr. Thompson, coincidentally, wrote the shining review on the back cover of Lost at Sea)
this book is both playful and mystifying. heartwarming and achingly sad. adorable and thought provoking.
the story really hit close to home for me as it reminded me very much of the relationship with my last girlfriend and many of the conversations we shared. Mal has obviously had his share of beautiful moments in relationships, because no one could write such honest and well-developed dialogue and soliloquy on these topics without having been put through it themselves.
of course, the story and the script isn't the only beauty of this graphic novel. Mal's art is superb. i don't think anyone else with any other style could have ever illustrated this story as effectively.
Mal's cartoony drawing style portrays an innocence and magical quality that is not only adequate for the themes explored, but is absolutely enchanting. the thick lines and heavy spaces reinforce the serious, unsteady nature of the lead character, raleigh. her struggle and insecurities are exemplified by mal's broad strokes and dynamic illustrations.
as i said, the book is thoroughly engaging and heart-touching.
it may only be a half-hour read. but it is one i intend to read at least once a month until august. probably longer.
thank you, Mal, for finally putting this together. now make another, please.
