Prescient

Just returned from seeing the movie "Gravity" and was struck by the fact that I now really only go to the movie theater to see FX spectacle and i stay home to watch narrative drama via TV (or what we once called TV) on my laptop. It's my impression that much of Darley's excellent book anticipates this development.

How to create the look of information

Infographics is the new cool thing in publishing. Put the word into Amazon search and you'll come up with more than three hundred titles, either tech books (like this one) or mainstream books using infographics as the theme: The infographics history of the world; The infographics book of the human body. Maybe we can expect The Infographics Cookbook later this year.

Most of the titles though are of the tech sort and I think Randy Krum's book is as good as any for a broad overview of infographics. The seven chapters present a ton of information in easily accessible writing style. Predictably the text leans towards online visual presentation rather than print and one of the strengths of the book are the extensive weblinks (plus a brief commentary about them) at the end of each chapter, for all kinds of templates, graphics and tools used for creating designs.

I found chapter four on infographic resumes particularly interesting. This seems to be a coming trend though I found the samples shown anything but concise. Pages 178 shows a conventional typed resume and on the opposite page the same information interpreted as a colorful graphic. This visual was hardly the sort of thing any HR manager would be able to absorb quickly. Fortunately several companies (like LinkedIn) are exploring ways of presenting professional details in a standard visual format.

I think it's worth saying that this is not a book about the specifics of graphic design and typography in infographics, it steps back from that to present a broader view and like many titles about a visual subject takes rather too many words to explain something where a picture and caption would have worked better. I think it really would have helped the reader if the illustrations throughout the pages used good and bad examples and deep captions to explain the differences. The several dozen illustrations in the book only point out positive aspects and not what to avoid.

The book's product is typical for a tech book: largish type, wide margins for captions and credits, a reasonable matt art for the color graphics. There is an index and book list with only eight titles and surprisingly it doesn't include the enormous, 480 page Information Graphics from Taschen. It also didn't include a small chunky book that reproduces several hundred Snapshots from USA Today: USA TODAY Snapshots®: More Than 2,000 Facts and Figures on Life, Love, Money, and Sports!. These really are ultimate infographics: very concise and beautifully designed. A recently published fascinating book entirely based on infographics is: Around the World: The Atlas for Today.

Randy Krum's book is the ideal guide if you are starting out in infographics.

Beyond cool

It would be one thing if the book Cool Infographics was simply filled with, well, cool infographics (it is). But it's also a very well written resource on all things visual design. Randy Krum takes you through everything you need to know beyond just a pretty picture... the history of medium, why they're effective, dealing with copyright issues, naming, SEO, keywords, landing pages, dimensions, and so much more.

As expected, the book is incredibly well designed, with clean lines, eye-popping graphics, and easy to follow links. As a career development professional, I especially enjoyed the infographic resume section, and geeked out over the math instruction that detailed how to calculate the relative size of a circle in an infographic, based on area, not just width.

Overall, this is a great book not just for visual designers, but also stat fans, information geeks, and online marketers. Check it out.

Grade 2-5-- Another madcap tale of the Wild West from the same duo that created the rollicking Charlie Drives the Stage (Holiday, 1989). Shorty Long is in debt to everyone; when they start demanding payment, he figures death is the only way out, and fakes his demise--coffin and all. Widow Macrae isn't fooled, though, and sits up all night to watch the body. If Shorty doesn't move by morning, she'll nail the coffin and bury it. And if he does move, he pays up. As luck would have it, a group of on-the-run bandits happen upon the phony corpse and, out of respect, try to close the coffin. But to do so they'll have to trim Shorty's very long nose, and he jumps up to protest. The shocked robbers take flight, leaving their loot behind, and Shorty is saved in more ways than one. Like the earlier title, this story is carried by the exaggerated "down-home," folksy humor. And once again, Rounds' crayon-and-line drawings, rugged and comical, perfectly complement the story's kooky wit. The story itself is not as convincing or smooth as the first yarn, and the premise of faked death may be confusing to some younger literal readers. Shorty Long owes everyone money and Widow Macrae wants her money now! Shorty is afraid to pay because than everyone will want their money, too. So Shorty acts died, but Widow realizes that Shorty is not died and offers to bury him. Shorty remains still as Widow watches him into the night. Widow says she will burry him in the morning if he doesn't move by than.
The story takes a twist when a gang of outlaws show up see Shorty in the coffin. Shorty remains still even as the outlaws talk about a train they robbed and the money they stole. But wait till you see what happens when one of them suggest to cut Shorty's nose off to make him fit in the coffin. You'll have to read the book to see what happens and if Widow gets his money. You will get a laugh out of this book!

Liz Rider 16th January 2006 QEII Hospital Herts Listened to the Birth preparation CD 20+ times "I started with cramps on Sunday evening which developed into contractions on Monday lunch time. I was having 20-30 second contractions every 2 minutes. The hospital told me to call back when they were really painful, at least 60 seconds long and 3-4 minutes apart. I was told my baby was trying to get into labour. At 6pm my waters broke and the hospital asked me to come in saying they would probably send me home but needed to check me. I arrived at hospital at 7pm and was told the water birth expert would arrive in 1 hours which wasn't a problem unless I was a miracle case. A while later the midwife confirmed I was fully dilated! Officially active labour was 2 hours and 27 minutes. A very positive experience. Pain - what pain?!!!" Elizabeth McGowan 28th October 2005 Rotherham Hospital Listened to the Birth preparation CD 6-10 times "I was one of those women who was totally terrified of the thought of birth from the age of seven. My sister who is a midwife was present and couldn't believe her sister was being so calm, relaxed and in control throughout the whole labour. I went into a totally hypnotic world of peace and calm - I closed my eyes throughout, breathed deeply at each contraction and was sprayed with water to cool me, and a flannel on my forehead. I felt very calm and in control - especially my breathing. (The birth music was very relaxing). Before hand I didn't feel I could relax and be hypnotised but it appeared to work! My labour started on the Wednesday late afternoon and my baby was born at 5pm on the Thursday. I used the TENS machine for approximately 12 hours on Wednesday evening and also kept mobile during contractions. I went into hospital at approximately 5am when contractions were approximately 5 minutes apart. I was 3cm dilated when I arrived but then things slowed down. I then continued with aromatherapy massage from my partner and walking/keeping mobile. I was sent home at midday and my waters broke at 12:30 and it then all started. Back in hospital I managed on gas and air and although I wanted a water birth they decided against it because of my blood pressure. My daughter was born at 4:50pm. I coped mainly by focusing on my breathing - mainly the out-breath. At no point did I feel I needed more pain relief. I'm confident the CDs did help - I was so calm! It was a very positive labour and birth for me."

Maggie didn't set out to become a birth expert - in fact, she's an unlikely convert. Caming birth Prep

I haven't given birth yet, but this CD has helped drastically to calm my fears and build my confidence in my ability to birth. Her voice is soothing, relaxing, and takes you through the birth process peacefully. I will be bringing it to the Labor and Delivery room in the hospital.

Worth it

I bought similar meditations for ovulation when we were trying to conceive and although I am not sure if the meditation had any affect on my cycle, it did ease my mind. This meditation did the same thing. I am eagerly awaiting the birth of our first child and listening to this helps me reinforce the positive. I plan to use it during labor.
