Making Good: How Ex-Convicts Reform and Rebuild Their Lives, by Shadd Maruna

Can hardened criminals really reform? Making Good provides resounding proof that the answer is yes. This book provides a fascinating narrative analysis of the lives of repeat offenders who, by all statistical measures, should have continued on the criminal path but instead have created lives of productivity and purpose. This examination of the phenomenology of "making good" includes an encyclopedic review of the literature on personal reform as well as a practical guide to the use of narratives in offender counseling and rehabilitation.

The author's research shows that criminals who desist from crime have constructed powerful narratives that aided them in making sense of their pasts, finding fulfillment in productive behaviors, and feeling in control of their future. Borrowing from the field of narrative psychology, Maruna argues that to truly understand offenders, we must understand the stories that they tell—and that in turn this story-making process has the capacity to transform lives. Making Good challenges some of the cherished assumptions of various therapy models for offenders and supports new paradigms for offender rehabilitation. This groundbreaking book is a must read for criminologists, forensic psychologists, lawyers, rehabilitation counselors, or anyone interested in the generative process of change.

"Making Good" makes good sense!
By Paul K. Fauteck, Psy.D., DABPS, forensic psychologist and author of "Going Straight: An ex-convict/psychologist tells why and how"
Dr. Maruna shines the bright lights of objectivity, intellectual courage, and scientific inquiry, into a dimly understood subject, one which too many people would rather ignore: Specifically, why is criminal recidivism so commonplace, what are the social policies and practices that discourage rehabilitation, what beliefs about criminal behavior do we need to re-examine, how do some offenders manage to reconstruct their lives in spite of all the barriers, and what should we be learning from them. He doesn't preach, he doesn't harangue, he just presents the facts in a convincing and very readable manner, and enlivens the text with a variety of case histories and interviews. Sure to be appreciated by the general public as well as behavioral scientists and correctional experts, "Making Good..." is destined to be a classic in its field.

an outstanding contribution
By George Grunwald
I was a psychiatric social worker in prison and parole mental health settings for eighteen years. During my first few years working at prison, I searched for guidance in the literature on therapy of criminality. I found little. The literature then available -- the late eighties, early nineties -- was written by advocates who idealized prisoners, or by wannabe prosecutors who demonized them. Both camps presented ideology; neither portrayed reality, at least as I saw it; they were of no help in my efforts to help my clients quit crime. Making Good does present that reality. It does so very well. I would have found it helpful at the outset of my career in corrections, and believe it would still be valuable to clinicians now.

Making Good is based on interviews with approximately sixty men and women with histories of petty crime. Half had quit crime, half were still at it. The interview transcripts ring true. In them I recognize the men I saw in individual and group therapy. Building on these interviews, Dr. Maruna articulates achievable and relevant treatment objectives.

He starts with a basic observation. Most petty criminals "age out." They get jobs. They get married. They stop committing crimes. Although this phenomenon is well documented, it is not understood. We do not know why some men give up crime while others continue. Dr. Maruna considers the usual explanations for this aging out process -- "maturation," burnout, increased social and economic opportunity. He shows none of these factors explain why some men leave the life of crime while others do not.

Calling criminals who quit crime "desisters," and those who continue "persisters." he asks if comparing the two sets can lead to an explanation of why some criminals quit while others continue.

He then asks a further question. If it can be determined how desisters differ from persisters, can an understanding this "aging out" process can be applied to helping persisters quit crime? I had asked this question myself, and not come up with an answer. Dr. Maruna does offer an answer, which I believe is least partially accurate.

He finds no significant difference in the usual suspects: psychopathology, intelligence and educational levels, histories of poverty and age of onset of criminal activity. Desisters and persisters both offer reliable histories of physical abuse. Many were in foster care, where they suffered yet worse abuse. They report egregious sexual abuse in foster care. One respondent tells of being rented out by his foster home on weekends to a pedophile ring.

Persisters and desisters are more alike than different. Persisters are not wholeheartedly committed to crime. Desisters are not enthusiastic law abiding citizens. Desisters and persisters are both fundamentally antisocial. They also agree that being a small time crook is a miserable way to live. Persisters feel stuck in this misery. Desisters have opted out of that misery, more than they have opted into society

The only significant difference between the two sets is locus of control. Persisters see themselves as victims of circumstance, with no way out of the life of crime, while desisters see themselves as agents of their own destiny, capable of doing something other than crime.

This book has four fundamental assets:

First, Dr. Maruna is exquisitely attuned to criminals, both unreconstructed and reformed.
He captures the thought and speech of this population; their passive voice expressing the disconnect between themselves and their crimes, and the active voice when they share something they've done right. He tracks the petty criminal's resolution, when arrested, to quit crime, and his ensuing sense of futility as he slips back into his old ways once out of jail.

In the persisting criminal's own eyes, he is the true, helpless victim of his own crimes. He denigrates anyone who succeeds in managing every day adult responsibilities. If he desists, the skepticism of people who knew him before his reform discourages him, while the positive response of people who came into his life afterward surprises him.

Persisters and desisters tell very different life narratives. Asked about critical turning points in their lives, desisters talk of things they have done as adults. Persisters talk of things that happened to them as children. The portrait of men doing life on the installment plan, and those done paying that debt is worth the price of admission.

Second, his methodology encourages humility in therapy of criminality. He makes it clear that when we talk about crime and criminality, we are dealing with at best roughly defined, very unclear concepts. Further, in differentiating desisters and persisters, we are dealing not with black and white, but with shades of gray. Constantly returning to the interviews, he shows a reality that is complex and uncertain.

If we are not certain what we are treating, it makes sense to be conservative in therapy of criminality. I was often exhorted to confront prisoners about their crimes, to correct their thinking errors, to teach them life skills. These can be useful and effective interventions if appropriate, but I was reluctant to use them until I knew they fit my clients. For many years I limited myself to listening carefully, and making sure that I made it safe for clients to talk. I stuck to my guns, but Making Good would have left me feeling less on my own.

Third, Dr. Maruna models self awareness. He is willing to call himself out. He thought it would be easy to find criminals determined to continue crime, happy in their choice. He admits he was wrong. He found very few persisting criminals happy in their work. Most wished they could drop out of crime.

Having debunked the notion that these are "super predators," he also acknowledges that by labeling them "persisters," he perpetuates the notion that they are predators after all. Persistence implies determination and commitment to the criminal life. Dr. Maruna owns up to the linguistic trap of his own making.

Fourth, having established the difference between desisters and persisters, Dr. Maruna provides a solid basis for relevant and effective therapy of criminality. Most therapy of criminality assumes that criminals must be forced to admit they have hurt their victims. They must be forced to develop insight and accept the principle of right and wrong.

Dr. Maruna shows these ideas are wrong. Since desisters and persisters differ in the realm of self-efficacy, not in morality, confronting criminals is a waste of time. Dr. Maruna dismisses clinicians who believe that for criminals, "incriminating themselves is in their own best interests." Rather than trying to get criminals to become good, we need to focus on helping them feel effective.

The question then, is how to promote self-efficacy. It will not happen overnight. There will be no epiphany, no bolt from the blue. There will be no conversion on the road to Damascus. Instead, there needs to be a change in habits. Quitting crime is like quitting smoking; people do it all the time. Successful desistance, prevention of relapse, demands follow up. Desisters are not "cured." They enter recovery. They need a support system.

This formulation is consistent with my own experience. Only occasionally did my telling clients how to solve their problems do any good. They rarely left sessions with an insight for which I could take credit. In my best groups the group members came up with their own answers to questions raised by their peers. My job was to make it safe for them to discuss problems and come up with their own answers. I believe that my ideas for solutions were consistently better than theirs, but the ideas the group came up with were their own. They benefitted more from learning to solve problems on their own, without resorting to crime, than in learning how I would solve their problems.

If I not only facilitated the group, but also made it mine, the group failed. If I facilitated the group and relinquished control so that the members owned it, the group succeeded.

I have one caveat. This book is a snapshot. It shows the difference between persisters and desisters, but not how the difference came about. A longitudinal study might show this evolution and might also correct the book's one defect: it underestimates how hard it is to quit crime. Quitting crime takes persistence in therapy, in recovery, in education and cultivation of a sense of being the author of one's own destiny.

Still, this book remains unique in my experience in offering a vision of change which is effective because it passes no moral judgments. It builds upon solid evidence of the difference between criminals who quit and criminals who do not. Its findings, its approach and methodology make it worth reading for anyone thinking about the objectives of therapy in correctional settings.

For Very Young Children
By GreyMinivanGuy
This is a nice book that compares the Armor of God to the "armor" we wear while riding a bike. This version seems to be best geared to 2-3 year old children -- it was just a little too "young" for our 4 1/2 year old.

Stepping into the Circle
THE GODDESS IS ALIVE AND well in Texas.
Her sacred grove is a one-bedroom apartment on the
East Side, where the traffic noise rattles the windows and
rain leaks in through the crack above the door. In the age
of computers and stock portfolios, She has traded Her celestial
raiment for a business suit. The Hands that spun the
web of creation chop vegetables, light incense, type letters.
The Voice that called the stars into being answers the hotline
at the domestic violence shelter downtown. The Goddess
sings Aretha Franklin in the shower at night, and
sometimes She forgets who She is.
Then She looks in the mirror and sees the light of the
Sacred in Her eyes. She remembers dancing bare-breasted
at Beltane and standing with arms upraised in the center
of a ring of oaks with chant ringing in Her ears as She
weighs dragon’s blood resin at the local metaphysical supply
store. She thinks of the praise that falls from Her lips
on a moonlit night. She remembers Herself.
So can you.
By now you have read books on Wicca, searched the Internet
like a big-game hunter on safari, and networked until you
couldn’t tell one Amber or Raven from another. You’ve bought
specially charged candles and been to festivals; you’ve memorized
lists of correspondences for colors, days of the week, elements,
astrological signs, herbs, deities, and animals. Maybe
you have been part of a coven or other sort of group, maybe
not. You have certainly gathered quite a collection of ritual
robes, jewelry, and tubes of henna paste.
The problem, however, is not with whom you have worked
or what you have worn. The problem is that you look in the
mirror and you still don’t remember who you are. Life feels
heavy, and the rituals you attend have started to bore you.
There is something fundamental that’s missing from your
religion, and you hate to admit it. After all, when you found
Wicca, it felt so much like coming home. Does your dissatisfaction
mean you’re in the wrong house after all this time?
Before you start to pack, consider this: humans are a
species constantly in search. At the beginning of our history
we searched for food, and when we realized that potential
food was much bigger than we were, we searched for a big
stick to hit it with. We searched for shelter, and then when
the basic issues of survival were covered, we searched for
community so we wouldn’t have to face the dark nights
alone. Once we learned to band together and share the labor,
we had time to search for something bigger: meaning, purpose,
something to explain why we are here and why we
share our existence with disagreeable things like murder,
flood, politicians, and mosquitoes. We needed something to
give us a place in the universe―a vantage point from which
things made sense.
Religion of any kind is a way to find that something. It
became clear to the human race that the meaning of life―
the purpose of it all―would not be the same for every person.
Hence the rise of so many religions and philosophies.
Every faith approaches the search in a different way and
finds a different idea to focus on. Christians, most often, seek
salvation from our own sinful natures and deliverance from
the evils of the world. Put very simply, Buddhists seek
enlightenment―a transcendence of the physical realm in
order to pursue the spiritual one. Wiccans, along with a number
of others, seek union.
Someone once asked me, “What’s the point of this Wicca
thing? I mean, if you’re not trying to get into Heaven or find
Nirvana, what are you trying to do?”
That is a tough one, and a question I don’t think many of
us have given a lot of thought to. It is difficult to step back
and look at the bigger picture. I gave the only answer I knew,
then or now. The point of Wicca, the real mystery behind it
all, is to remember the Divinity within ourselves and all
things; to manifest our God and Goddess all the time, every
day, every moment; to love as They love, to give as They give;
to serve Them in perfect trust, and thus bring Their grace
more fully into the world; to understand that we are the
embodiment of the Divine love and nurture, and to express
that love in the world; to walk as God and Goddess.
Sound impossible? It isn’t. We already have all the tools we
need; we only have to recognize them and teach ourselves
how to use them to return to a view of the world where anything
is possible―to see like a child with wide eyes and an
open heart.
The rituals and other tools of Wicca serve as a bridge
between ourselves and that goal, and as tools they can be
used effectively or clumsily. I can’t count the number of rituals
I have attended where the most spiritual part of the event
was the potluck afterward when everyone shook off the
boredom of another full moon just like the hundred before it
and really got to celebrate. The most moving rituals are the
ones with the fewest stage directions and the least fuss,
where energy flows along its natural currents and we dance
with it. Unfortunately these are in the minority for most
groups, and in solo Wicca it can be even harder to create a
sense of the sacred when using the same old chants and the
same old colored candles. We try not to venture too far from
what we’ve learned from books and covenmeets, since
branching out means that eventually our branches will intersect
with those of other religions. Wiccans have great pride,
I have noticed, in how different we are from the world’s
biggest sects. Perhaps we think it shows growth on our part,
or perhaps we simply want to distance ourselves from the
ways of our youth that often left us scarred and wanting. We
forget the moments of fellowship, the hymns that were part
of our blood, the parts of ourselves that those faiths actually
did satisfy even if we grew beyond them and went searching
for something more.
The problem is that in our desire to separate ourselves
from our childhood faiths and eke out a place of our own in
the grand scheme of things, we refuse to learn from our religious
heritage. Obviously if the Christians do it, it must be
useless. Never mind the millions of people who do find the
Christian tradition a fulfilling path. Never mind the people
out there who are striving to be Christlike―not political, who
are not our enemies. We can’t learn anything from them, of
course. Everything we need as Wiccans is in a book somewhere
or in ourselves or in the natural world, right?
The vast majority of our co-religionists nowadays have read
all the books on beginning Wicca they can stomach and don’t
live anywhere near the natural world that our ancestors had to
struggle with for daily survival. It’s difficult to revere nature
with any sense of reality when the nearest natural area is thirty
miles away and the closest thing to it is a manufactured park
littered with beer cans and stray drug dealers. We spend all day
encased in metal and glass, going from house to car to office
and back again, and many even work through meals.
Where does that leave us? We are in many ways disconnected
from the nature we are supposed to worship. If having
a ritual outdoors means schlepping into the country with a
ten-pound bag of ritual tools (the mystical Tote Bag of Shadows)
and soaking ourselves in bug repellant, what do we do
the other three hundred or so days of the year? In our society
we are constantly bombarded with images of violence, hatred,
and indifference, and our attempts to change things are often
met with hostility. The magic in the world sometimes seems
to have a precarious hold on life at best. How can you live as a
7
Wiccan every day when your lifestyle is better suited to urban
guerilla warfare?
It isn’t enough to be a Wiccan on full moons or sabbats.
No one ever became fluent in a new language by using it
once a month. The best way is to surround yourself with the
lesson; to speak Wiccan from dawn to dusk until it becomes
your nature.
One oft-overlooked remedy for our modern dilemma is
the ancient tradition of a daily personal practice. In every
religion the world over there are people who take the devotional
path, giving over large parts of their day to ritual,
prayer, and communion with whatever face God wears for
them. The dictionary definition of the word devotion is to give
wholeheartedly to something. Given the Wiccan view of the
universe as a place of cause and effect, it would follow that
the more you devote to your sense of the Divine, the more
the Divine will devote to you. If our goal as Wiccans is to
turn our belief in the God and Goddess into reality, immersing
ourselves in our relationship with Them is the surest way
to turn our belief into knowledge.
How do I know this? My life is every bit as hectic and the
city I live in every bit as toxic as most people’s. I haven’t
reached some blissful state of spiritual perfection, but I have
seen its nearest neighbor in people I have encountered over
the years, and I have begun to learn from their success.
The first group I noticed whose religion and life were as
one were Catholic nuns who worked in the hospital where I
was a secretary at the age of twenty-two. There were several
elderly Sisters who tended to the patients’ spiritual needs,
and in a building full of trauma and pain they were always
calm, gracious, and quick to smile. They moved with quiet
surety through the halls, their voices gentle and almost
musical. Speaking to any of the Sisters gave my spirits a lift,
which was vital given how much I hated the job.
I had to wonder, though, what got them through? They saw
the worst of humanity in an endless parade of communicable
diseases and gunshot wounds, yet maintained their sense of
grace. I had to know if they could still smile when they got
home at night, or if it took all their strength just to stay human
in such a place.
Finally I asked one of the nuns how she dealt with such a
stressful workplace. She smiled at me rather beatifically and
told me that when she got up in the morning she prayed.
At breakfast, lunch, and dinner she prayed. At bedtime she
prayed, and a dozen other moments in between, keeping in
constant, loving dialogue with God. The nuns didn’t just
believe the tenets of their faith, they lived them from morning
till night.
I couldn’t help but be impressed, as well as feel a little
sheepish. I had tried for a long time to tell myself that there
was nothing that I could learn from Christians; that their
narrow-mindedness was the reason the world was going to
their hell in a handbasket. In other words, I’d been as narrow
as I thought they were. It was what some of my Pagan contemporaries
call a “cosmic two-by-four”―a whop in the head
from the gods when you’ve been an idiot.
The idea of daily practice, however, stuck with me long
after I had taken the lesson of tolerance to heart. I started to
ask around among my Pagan friends, finding out to my chagrin
that, for the most part, they were bereft of any sort of
personal daily rituals beyond a few minutes of meditation.
Life was simply too busy, they said, to do half the things they
wanted to to stay in touch with the God and Goddess.
That led me to wonder whether a life too busy for our
deepest beliefs is really much of a life at all.
After hunting down a number of books on the monastic
life, I discovered that in the arena of personal practice, the
humble monks and nuns had us beat. Naturally it’s easier to
devote your entire life to God if you live in an abbey, where
the environment exists to support your religious quest. Yet
despite the inherent differences between monastic and lay
lives, there are valuable lessons to be found from these little
communities, regardless of creed or location.
Buddhist monks―and, indeed, a great number of Buddhists
in the larger world―have similar practices to the
Catholics. They move in a rhythm of mindfulness and meditation
throughout the day, even using housework as an opportunity
to meditate on the wonder of the present moment. To a
Buddhist, every action is a chance to learn and grow spiritually.
As a result, the Buddhist reaches a state of emotional
equilibrium where stress and angst have only a fleeting place
in the course of the day.
The Sufi dervishes, who practice a form of Islamic mysticism,
integrate their prayer and liturgy with dance, music,
and the well-known “whirling” that helps the practitioner
reach Allah. The poet Rumi, credited with founding Sufism
as a sect, frequently referred to God as “the Beloved.”

Meanwhile, Westerners run around with cellular phones
plastered to their heads shrieking at each other in traffic and
having heart attacks on an alarmingly regular basis.
Hmm.
Even among laypeople, Christians and Jews appear to
have an easier time integrating their spiritual lives with their
daily ones, perhaps because so many people have given it so
much thought. Those who want to become more spiritually
attuned in mainstream religions have dozens of resources at
their fingertips.
Take, for example, the recent “What Would Jesus Do?” phenomenon.
It may seem like more of a marketing ploy than a
religious precept, but if you look past the merchandise and
into a less cynical view, it is an excellent way to integrate faith
and the mundane world. Taken at face value it is a profound
question. How would a deity act in this situation? What would
he say? Are my own actions following my religious ideal?
Books abound on Christian and Jewish daily prayer; there
are plenty of devotionals, calendars, and classes on living a
prayerful life. In this way, Pagans are at a decided disadvantage.
Perhaps we simply haven’t given it enough thought. We
learn from the outset that we are not separate from Deity,
that the whole world is God and Goddess, but what do we do
with that belief? How does that belief translate into direct
experience in day-to-day life?
I have known a handful of Wiccans who managed to
develop an integrated magical/mundane existence, and the
effect is amazing. These are the truly powerful Wiccans, the
ones whose every word resonates with Divinity. Their lives
11
run more smoothly, more peacefully, and when disaster
strikes, it seems to flow through them like water. The source?
Daily practice, a devotional life.
Why don’t more people live that way? The first cry is, “I
don’t have time! I have to get to my meeting and take the
kids to soccer practice and answer my e-mail and get that
proposal ready for Monday and clean the bathroom and wash
the car and figure out what to have for dinner!”
You’d rather be doing all that than a ritual?
As a society, we have given time the power of a god. The
clock is our idol and we bow to its whims, always running a
little behind like the terrible sinners we are. How many
minutes of the day can the average person give up without
compromise? Very few, but the truth is, there is no such
thing as a spiritual life without sacrifice. In the olden days
perhaps it was part of the harvest or an animal (or even a
member of the tribe in extreme cases) that went to the gods
to show them how much they were loved and respected
(and, in some cases, feared). In our time, the sacrifice must
be time. We are always called by the gods to give up what we
think is precious. In our day, we crave an extra two or three
hours even though we waste large amounts of the extant
twenty-four trying to climb the corporate ladder. Meanwhile,
our inner lives languish. To find peace in the valley of
the shadow, it’s worth getting up twenty minutes earlier.
Trust me on this one.
I find it a bit novel, and rather laughable, that a lot of Wiccans
(especially the young) want their religion to serve them
as quickly and efficiently as possible with a minimum of per-

Packed with great ideas...
By Keslynn
This is not yet another Wicca 101 book. Instead, this book focuses on helping Wiccans to fill their lives with their spirituality rather than just being Wiccan for sabbats and esbats. For a relatively small book, this one is packed with great ideas on how to deepen your Wiccan/pagan spiritual practice. Added to that, the tips are actually solid practical things that anyone can do, nothing airy-fairy or impossibly complicated. In fact, I felt that many of the points were fairly obvious, but these are definitely things that need to be pointed out. For example, she suggests that the reader go out into nature (in whatever form it's available) and attune to his/her local environment. Seems pretty evident for a nature-based religion, but it's easy to forget to commune with nature and deity when you're working full time and juggling a jillion other things too.
Another thing I found very useful was the section of 3 things to think about at the end of each chapter. Mostly, these are questions that relate to personal practice and make you think about things you can do to integrate it into your daily life and make it more meaningful. I like that she didn't just spout out information and leave you hanging; she gives you the beginning steps to help you digest and use the concepts.
Finally, at the end of the book is "The Book of Moonlight" which contains some prayers and rituals to jump start you into daily practice. The prayers and invocations are beautifully written and useful.
Dianne Sylvan is not at all pompous and doesn't pretend to be the ultimate authority. She writes with humor and practicality, and best of all, she wants the reader to not get stuck on her words alone. Several times, she tells the reader to adjust her material to suit their own lives and spirituality. This is a very nice and refreshing change from the endless slew of Wicca 101 books. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be a Wiccan, even while at work, school, etc.

Fills a void in Wiccan literature
By A Customer
I've never written a review for Amazon.com, but had to do one for this book. I came across Dianne's website some time ago & was intrigued with her way of looking at Wicca. When I found out she'd published a book, I tracked it down & was even more profoundly moved by her observations. This is a woman who will make you THINK.
There are many books I've read about Witchcraft & Wicca. Plenty of info on tools, quarter calls, the gods/goddesses, etc. But I found something missing in most of them.
The most basic, essential thing of all: relationship with the Divine & how it affects your life on a very basic level.
There were times during this book where I had to stop & say, "YES! YES!" Cheers for Ms. Sylvan for having the heart & drive to write this book & get it out to the public.
Also, I have to say that the litergy in this book is some of the most beautiful I have ever read. The chapter titled "The Book of Moonlight" is going to be used often in my practices.

Wonderful read
By Dionne Ruff-Sloan
Ms. Sylvan has written a very personable, enjoyable book. It is a great resource for pagans who are looking to develop a more personal relationship with the Divine. I loved the "Things to think on" at the end of each chapter in which she ask some questions pertaining to how you felt about the information covered in the chapter. I think this would be a great book for covens (or solitaries) to use for discussion and Part 2 "The Book of Moonlight" containing daily prayers and rituals has inspired me to create my own "book of moonlight". I have begun to incorporate several of her suggestions (morning and evening devotionals) into my daily life and I must say that I have really made a difference to me.

Seeing is understanding: How complex ideas can be communicated via graphics   “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”
—Albert Einstein

Our everyday lives are filled with a massive flow of information that we must interpret in order to understand the world we live in. Considering this complex variety of data floating around us, sometimes the best — or even only — way to communicate is visually. This unique book presents a fascinating perspective on the subject, highlighting the work of the masters of the profession who have created a number of breakthroughs that have changed the way we communicate. Information Graphics has been conceived and designed not just for graphics professionals, but for anyone interested in the history and practice of communicating visually.

The in-depth introductory section, illustrated with over 60 images (each accompanied by an explanatory caption), features essays by Sandra Rendgen, Paolo Ciuccarelli, Richard Saul Wurman, and Simon Rogers; looking back all the way to primitive cave paintings as a means of communication, this introductory section gives readers an excellent overview of the subject. The second part of the book is entirely dedicated to contemporary works by today’s most renowned professionals, presenting 200 graphics projects, with over 400 examples — each with a fact sheet and an explanation of methods and objectives — divided into chapters by the subjects Location, Time, Category, and Hierarchy.

  • 200 projects and over 400 examples of contemporary information graphics from all over the world—ranging from journalism to art, government, education, business and much more
  • Four essays about the development of information graphics since its beginnings
  • Exclusive poster (673 x 475 mm / 26.5 x 18.7 in) by Nigel Holmes, who during his 20 years as graphics director for TIME revolutionized the way the magazine used information graphics

Data daze
By Robin
Look at all the amazing graphics in this huge book and it's hard to imagine that the original data existed just as numbers and text, in black and probably printed on white paper. Some very clever designers have managed to turn this raw data into beautiful eye-catching images. It's not only numbers into charts though, several pages show diagrams that interpret a situation: Improvised Explosive Devices in Afghanistan (pages 144-145) or the Tour de France (page 193) for example.

The first ninety-six pages (printed on a shorter page width) with four essays, look at the background and history of charts and diagrams. The best I thought was by Simon Rogers of the London Guardian with an interesting overview of data and the press. To go with the essays (in English, French and German) there are sixty-four illustrations as a visual timeline from 1144 BC to 2010. This includes a couple of old favourites: Minard's wonderful flow map of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow; Harry Beck's 1933 London Underground map.

The main section of the book is in four parts: Location; Time; Category; Hierarchy. Each explores graphics with generously sized images on the page and detailed sections where the original was quite large or a poster. The work is from the last ten years with a long caption to explain the concept and an additional caption for technical detail: project info; data source; research; design; illustration. I thought the range of material within the four sections very impressive and incredibly wide ranging, though predictably, some of the graphics really do appear to be unreadable (but still pretty looking).

Once again Taschen have chosen a subject and given it their usual thorough treatment with a comprehensive editorial in a beautifully produced book. No doubt Edward Tufte would dismiss most of the content as 'chart-junk' but I always thought his interesting observations were more concerned with the visual treatment of data for an academic or technical readership rather than eye candy for readers of magazines and the consumer press where so many of the book's graphics originally appeared.

If you need a book to learn how the best infographics have been made, or how to make great info graphic this is not the book.
If you want to know how info graphics begun, how they have evolved across the time, and general history, this is your book.
this book s a must have if you consider yourself a graphic designer data freak, but if you are looking to a collection or real and well made infographics look somewhere else: Malofiej books are a great example of great info graphics published in real world about real problems.

An excellent survey of the field
By Rom
Let's get the obvious out of the way: The 480 page book is beautiful and packed with dozens of very good info graphics. Only 10% are worthy of return visits, and that critique is meant for the field itself. It's very difficult to make a convincing, data-rich infographic and this book makes that problem painfully obvious.

The problem with so many of the infographics is their inability to convey a meaningful concept within a few seconds. This problem is compounded by vague rules of interpretation where you spend considerable time mentally mapping the relationships. For some people this may be fun, but infographics need more discipline as Tufte preaches, if we are to use them purposefully. The simpler the rules are, the faster you can start playing with it to draw your own conclusions about the data. Many of the infographics appear to be more focused on aesthetic treatments than showing information convincingly.

The book misses an opportunity to present data-similar infographics but with different concepts, sequentially. This would allow readers to see how data can be manipulated rhetorically. More often than not, the data we want to show has some kind of skew that needs attention.

  • A step-by-step guide to developing the MEAN stack components from scratch to achieve maximum flexibility when building an e-commerce application
Who This Book Is For

This book is for a web or full stack JavaScript developer who wants to get a head start on developing an e-commerce application with MEAN. A basic knowledge of the MEAN stack is highly recommended.

What You Will Learn

  • Enhance website usability with social logins such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google
  • Create integrations with payment platforms such as PayPal
  • Apply full-text search functionality in MongoDB
  • Build a flexible categorization system to organize your products
  • Secure your app by creating SSL certificates and run payment platforms in a live environment
In Detail

MEAN stands for MongoDB, Express, AngularJS, and Node.js. It is a combination of a NoSQL database, MongoDB, with a couple of JavaScript web application frameworks, namely Express.js and Angular.js. These run on Node.js.

There is always an ever-growing list of requirements while designing an e-commerce application, which needs to be flexible enough for easy adaptation. The MEAN stack allows you to meet those requirements on time and build responsive applications using JavaScript.

This book will show you how to create your own e-commerce application using the MEAN stack. It will take you step by step through the parallel process of learning and building. It will also teach you to develop a production-ready, high-quality e-commerce site from scratch and will provide the knowledge you need to extend your own features to the e-commerce site.

This book starts with a short introduction to the MEAN stack, followed by a step-by-step guide on how to build a store with AngularJS, set up a database with MongoDB, create a REST API, and wire AngularJS. It also shows you how to manage user authentication and authorization, check multiple payment platforms, add products' search and navigation, deploy a production-ready e-commerce site, and finally add your own high-quality feature to the site.

By the end of the book, you will be able to build and use your own e-commerce app in the real world and will also be able to add your own new features to it.

Style and approach

This book is a step-by-step guide on how to build a real-time e-commerce app with MEAN. Each transition is well explained, and each chapter begins with the required background knowledge.

I was expecting something better...
By Powolny
I bought this book hoping to build an e-commerce app with the MEAN stack but after reading the book and building the website I can say that this is not an e-commerce app... The biggest error is that when creating a product it's not possible to attach an image to it, even the code provided by the author is not working...

It's not a beginner book! You have to have a minimum knowledge of the M.E.A.N. stack before reading this book, there are errors in the book and if you don't know the MEAN stack or if you don't have a good IDE you will be lost and frustrated.

Two positive points that I found in this book is to learn how to use ng-cart and login with social accounts.

PS:After more than one month I was able to contact the author about errors and about the image upload problem and he just created an issue on github and told me he will fix it, I'm still waiting....
